Born in: Mars Hill, NC
Resided in: Asheville, NC

Lucille B. Buckner passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022, at her home. Mrs. Buckner was born May 21, 1928, in Madison County on what is now part of the campus of Mars Hill University. She lived her entire adult life in Asheville. She attended Madison County public schools and was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church, Asheville. We give thanks and praise for her life. Proverbs 31.31, “Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gates.”

She was the first born and last surviving of six children born to Marty L. Buckner and Lessie Hensley Buckner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Walter Douglas Buckner, brother, Carl L. Buckner; sisters, Judy Wood, Sandra Talley, Betty Jo Buckner, infant sister, Helen Buckner, and brother-in-law, Clyde H. Wood.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Buckner Barron (Robert) of Asheville; grandson, Timothy Buckner (Shanna); granddaughter, Kelly Buckner Lunsford (Josh); and numerous great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ron Talley of Swannanoa; sister-in-law, Vivian Buckner of Mint Hill; nephew Paul Buckner of SW Calgary, Alberta, Canada; niece, Pam Buckner Jirgal of Monroe; and daughter-in-law Jacqui Buckner Justice (Ronnie), whom she loved as a daughter. She was especially devoted to her cats Pumpkin, Missy and Sophie, who provided her with love and companionship for many years.

Mrs. Buckner was an avid bird watcher and late-night reader. However, her true passion was working in her yard and gardens, which were the pride of her neighborhood. Flowers and cuttings from her yard can be found in friends and relative’s yards all over Western North Carolina, and will always serve as a fond reminder of her giving spirit and love she had for family and friends.

She was a charter member of the High Lights Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. She served as officer for most of the chapter offices during her membership as well as various committee chairmanships. She worked for 42 years for The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. As bookkeeper and store manager, she routinely traveled to stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and West Virginia, only retiring in 1991 to serve as caregiver for her ill sister.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m.

Private entombment will follow that at Forest Lawn Mausoleum.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My sweet Granny. Where to begin… You have been a second mother and a devoted friend to me for 50 years. We have laughed & cried together, loved and encouraged each other, shared many funny stories about our grandchildren, celebrated holidays and birthdays too numerous to count. It’s going to be hard without you, but I wouldn’t call you back if I could. Your kind and caring ways will live forever in the memories of everyone who knew you. You will be sorely missed. I will close by reciting this precious verse from a children’s book:
    I’ll love you forever;
    I’ll like you for always;
    As long as I’m living
    my precious Granny you’ll be.
    Rest in peace, Granny. I love you.
