Kenneth Allen Butler, 82, of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, surrounded by love.
Ken was born on August 22, 1942, to the late James L. Butler and Geneva Smith Butler.
He spent over five decades dedicated to the automobile industry, where his strong work ethic and commitment earned him the respect of many. But while he was devoted to his career, his greatest joy was always his family.
Ken is survived by his loving wife and dance partner of many years, Gwen Bishop Butler. Together, they shared a deep love for traveling, especially to Folly Beach, South Carolina, holding a special place in their hearts. For 17 years, they visited often, and when they weren’t soaking up the sun, you could find them enjoying a meal at their favorite spot, The Crab Shack. Ken also leaves behind his three children, each of whom brought him immense pride: Pam Podwel (Craig), Scott Wilbanks (Debbie) and Veronica “Cricket” Haake (Jeff). He is also survived by two dear sisters, Dixie Pelle and Wanda Baker and loved his nieces and nephews. To his grandchildren he was affectionately known as “Papa” — a title he cherished above all. Whether sharing stories, cracking jokes, or cheering them on in their own pursuits, Papa was always present with love and encouragement.
Sundays were sacred to Ken — not only for spending time with family but also for catching every NASCAR race. He was a true fan, never missing a lap. His love for country music and comedy added to his vibrant personality, always quick with a joke or a funny story to brighten someone’s day. His spirited, fun-loving nature made sure there was never a dull moment in his company.
Ken’s generosity knew no bounds—he was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer support, or share a kind word when it was needed most. His zest for life, his laughter, and his unwavering love for those around him will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of hard work, devotion to family, and the joy he spread through his humor and warmth will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held on Sunday, April 27th, 2025. The visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. with the service following at 3:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road. There will be a private burial held the following day.
His memory will forever live on, the laughter he shared, the love he gave, and the countless lives he touched.

Cricket, I am so sorry to learn of your dad. I remember having such nice conversations at the Oakley barber shop when he’d be there when I would take Cody to see Mr. Rice. Just know how much I love you my lifelong friend and if you need me, you know where I am.
I worked with Ken at the ‘Datsun’ dealership and later it became Nissan. He was such a good guy. He assisted many families and individuals in purchasing a vehicle. My thoughts are with the family.

Ken was my classmate at A C Reynolds. I remember his humor. He loved to pull pranks and tell jokes. Always friendly and kind. Over the years I have seen him at several class reunions and he had not changed. We will miss him at our next reunion. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
