Joe Howard Holmes, Jr., 77, of Candler, passed away Monday, January 27, 2020, at Mission Hospital.

A native of Asheville, Joe was a son of the late Joe Howard Holmes, Sr., and Lydia Mashburn Holmes. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Caleb Cantrell.

Mr. Holmes was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the USS Topeka. He was a member of Glady Fork Baptist Church and Upper Room Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Reep Holmes; sons, Brandon Roy Holmes (Nora Lynn), Bill Cantrell (Kim), and Roger Dale Emory (Kathy); 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sisters, Sandra Bailey and Betty Young (Harold); brothers, Larry Holmes (Diane) and James Holmes (Becky); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, at Pisgah Methodist Church Cemetery, 39 Pisgah Methodist Church Rd., Candler, NC, with Rev. Alf Miller officiating.
