JEAN L. BRYAN SELF
Jean L Bryan Self, 90, of Botany Drive, Asheville passed away in her sleep, after a short illness, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville on Tuesday morning, April 24, 2012.
A native of Madison County, she was born, July 26, 1921 in Marshall, NC to Louis Plumer Bryan and Margaret Emma Brown Bryan. In addition to her parents, she has joined in death her adored husband of 55 years, Evon Loy Self who died in 1999, two brothers, Phillip Bryan and Paul Bryan and two sisters, Louise Bryan Payne and Ruth Bryan Self, and niece M. Gwen Self.
Jean was raised in Hot Springs, NC and moved to Asheville when she married Evon in 1944, and except for about 10 years they spent in Florida, they lived there for the rest of their lives. Her greatest joy in life was sharing her love for Jehovah God with people who were interested in learning more about Him. She was a life-long member of Jehovah's Witnesses and volunteered her time and energy since her late teens to call on people in their homes. When asked what her career was she would say "I teach people the Bible," and teach she did—HUNDREDS of people! Her family, friends and all who knew her loved her dearly. She will be greatly missed. Everyone who knew her felt a close bond of love and each person felt her attention to them was personal and genuine, once she met you she never forgot your name. She LOVED PEOPLE! She was a very special person, vibrant, energetic and always had a smile for everybody!
She is survived by her youngest brother Robert Bryan (wife Dee), two brothers-in-law Delmar Payne and Allen Self. Nephews and nieces: Doyle Beam (wife Kathy), and Jane Cloninger (husband Don-deceased), Richard Bryan (wife Sandy), Larry Bryan (wife Linda), Sandra Morrell (husband Clayton), David Bryan (wife Janet), Lana Cheryl Muehling (husband, Richard), Sheila Wallace (husband DeWayne), Phyllis Anderson (husband Rick Israel), and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
Memorial Services will be held at 4 PM Sunday May 13 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 220 New Salem Road, Swannanoa, NC 28778. Kim Dockery will officiate. The family will receive friends afterwards at a Reception at Lake Tomahawk Community Center at 401 S. Laurel Circle Dr. Black Mountain, NC 28711. Jean will be buried in the Bryan Cemetery in Marshall, NC beside her beloved husband Evon.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is kindly assisting with the arrangements.
