Fletcher – James "Jim" Ervin Thorpe, 66, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Park Ridge Health Center. Jim was born in Asheville, NC to Evelyn Gregory Thorpe and the late James Zebual Thorpe. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving from 1965 to 1969. He loved the outdoors and would rather be hunting and fishing than anything else. Jim is survived by his loving companion of 29 years, Jennifer Buckner and her son Daryl Anderson; He is also survived by his son, Stephen Thorpe and his wife, Erin of Maryville, TN; a sister, Ina Treadway and her husband, Bob, of Daytona Beach, Fl; three brothers, Jerry Thorpe and his wife, Tina, of Asheville, Danny Thorpe of Fairview and Dean Thorpe and his wife, Kathy, of Fairview; one grandchild, Stephen Douglas Thorpe II and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends, Friday, June 21, 2013 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Fairview with Reverends Ronald Roberts and Chester Owenbey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Asheville, NC 28801. The family would also like to say a special thanks to all of Jim's many friends and for their support over the years. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
