Arden ~ Herbert "Lum" Columbus Allen, 84, died July 11, 2002 in a local hospital.
Born in Henderson County on April 19, 1918, Mr. Allen was the son of the late Herbert Albert Allen and Mary Dalton Allen. Mr. Allen was also preceded in death by two sisters, Anne Veins and Nora Lee and two brothers, Glenn and Emmitt Allen.
Mr. Allen retired from the Navy after 21 years of service for his country in World War II and Korea with medals as listed: American Defense, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, European Theatre with one star, Good Conduct with 3 stars, WW II Victory, Fleet Clasp, Air Medal and National Defense.
He also retired from the City of Asheville as groundskeeper of McCormick Field and the football stadium following 20 years of service.
He used to spend his time gardening, hunting, fishing, camping and golfing. Mr. Allen was a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lucille R. Allen of Arden; a daughter, Tera A. Taylor and her husband, Gary of Arden; a sister, Rachel Allen of Candler; a sister-in-law, Alene R. Shroat and her husband, Robert of Asheville; a grandson, Dale Alan Stafford and his wife, Amanda of Black Mountain; two great-granddaughters, Jessica Brooke Stafford of Candler and Jessica Lynn Jones of Fairview and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 2:00 PM at Patty's Chapel Cemetery with Rev. H.D. Houck officiating.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
