Harry Glenn Spears, 87, of Asheville, passed away on December 14, 2021.

He was the son of the late Sandford Euford Spears Sr. and the late Autry Hix Spears.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Naomi Holland Spears, his daughter Wren Spears Derreberry, and his brother Sandford Euford Spears Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin Spears Brooks and son-in-law, Tommy, grandchildren, Bryan “Rudy” Brooks, Emily “Charlie” Thomas (Matt), Tyler Derreberry, and Katie Derreberry, and great-grandson, Avery Derreberry. He was also blessed with many close friends that were more like grandchildren.

In 1952 he graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School. In 1953 Harry joined the army where he was stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia, during the Korean War. In 1955 he was honorably discharged.

They spent many years at their weekend home at Lake James where they learned to water ski and began competing on a national level. He has been inducted into the N.C. Water Skiing Hall of Fame.

He was always up for anything if Naomi was right by his side. Together they joined the Circle 8 Square Dance group where they met lots of great friends.

They traveled to Hawaii, Europe and out west, and have cruised the Caribbean twice.

The family will receive friends and family from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1:00 pm on Monday. Pastor Tom Hunter and Rev. Jim Odum will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CarePartners PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), in Asheville.

    So sorry to hear about your dad. He and your mom were part of our Nifty Fifty group that met each spring at Pawleys Island. We went to Lee Edward’s and were high school friends.
