George W. Benson, Jr.

George Washington Benson, Jr., formerly of Asheville, died on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Palmetto Health Richland, in Columbia, SC.
A native of Buncombe County, George was the son of the late George Washington, Sr., and Edith Lacy Benson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Brown Benson.
Mr. Benson proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Naval Air Force. He later went on to work in the newspaper industry for 45 years with both the Asheville Citizen-Times and Columbia State Record.
Mr. Benson is survived by his daughters, Gayle B. Messer and Gwynne L. Benson, two grandchildren, Dr. Garrick Messer (Jill) and Ginette Williams (Brad), step-granddaughter, Aimee Hall (Charles); and 11 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Green Hills Cemetery, Asheville. The Rev. Ron Brown will officiate.
His family will receive friends at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. for one hour prior to the service.
