Asheville, North Carolina
Eugene “Gene” Battle Welch, 78, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025. Born in Scotland Neck, NC, Gene carried his hometown in his heart wherever he roamed. It was in Scotland Neck that he formed the friendships and memories that would anchor him throughout his life.
A natural conversationalist, Gene made fast friends with everyone he met. His easygoing nature and quick wit could keep the laughter going late into the evening.
Gene was a gifted athlete in his younger years and later served his country with honor during the Vietnam War. As the chapters of his life unfolded, he discovered a deep love for sailing. He treasured his time in Hilton Head, SC in the company of friends as much as his secluded months in Eluthra, Bahamas surrounded by nature.
At various times in his nomadic life, Gene found solace in the mountains of North Carolina and eventually made Asheville his home for the last two decades.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lotta Smith Welch and his brother, Maxie Bryant Welch. Gene is survived by his beloved sister, Aleta Roberson.
In honor of Gene’s memory and his love for his hometown, donations may be made to Sylvan Heights Bird Park (www.shwpark.com), a sanctuary in Scotland Neck founded by a childhood friend.
Groce Funeral Home’s Lake Julian team is assisting the family.

Uncle Gene, I hate that we lost touch over the years. You were always fun and I know my Dad loved you.
You will be remembered fondly. I know that you are in a much better place with no pain. Say “hi” to Dad for me.
Love, Angi
Aunt Aleta and family,
So sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. We are praying that your wonderful memories bring you comfort.
Much love,
Debra & Earl
