Dr. Sgro pursued a new passion for Italian pastries. He took numerous classes at Asheville-Buncombe Technical College in the area of baking. He enjoyed hearing other much younger students talk about their dreams for a career in baking. He regularly made elaborate pastries that he shared with friends and the faculty at Carolina Day School. Dr. Sgro recently served on the board of the Western North Carolina Communities Foundation. A big personality, Dr. Sgro enjoyed golf, food, Italian language and culture, political commentary and Virginia Tech athletics. 1. Joe lit up any room he entered with his zest for life and his eagerness to connect with other people. You couldn’t help but smile (or laugh) when interacting with him. I was one of the recipients of his amazing pastries at Carolina Day School, and the faculty and staff couldn’t wait for Joe to arrive each week with his newest delectable creations. He was a true lifelong learner, and it was such a joy to know him. He will be greatly missed. I send my love to Bev and the whole Sgro family.

  2. Sorry to hear about Joe. He was a lot of fun to be around. He loved people and never meet a stranger. My love and prayers to Bev and her family.

  3. I am so sad to have just heard the news of Dr. Joe Sgro’s passing . Dr. Sgro was my beloved advisor at Virginia Tech 1992-1996. Before graduation I told him if my dream to move out west and he said go for it! He said someday you will have a family and won’t be able to do this. I did it and for 4 years enjoyed skiing and advancing my career in sales. After that I moved to Asheville in 2000 and learned he lived here with his wife. They invited me and my now husband over for dinner and allowed Ray to clean their gutters when we were broke as a joke. He continued to give me great advise and shared some of his best memories he had when he and his wife ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner and shared dreams of making it big someday which they did. He helped me get through those tough times with loving encouragement. I will never forget his kindness.

  4. It has been over 4 years. I miss you Nono (grandpa) I wish you were still here. Cancer won and it kills me to this day. I am doing a hero portrait of you and you totally deserve it. I hope you and Nonnie (grandma) are happy being together now that you are together. I hope you both live the happiest afterlife. I love you and know that I miss you. You deserve the world.

I love you and miss you so much,
    Your loving granddaughter, Huston Sgro

    • I miss you so much. I hope that you are happy where you are now. It’s really hard here without you. I got accepted to Foxcroft School, the school Nonnie was on the board at. Where Jenn went to school when she was in high school. I hope that you are proud of me I just wish that you were here to be with me and watch me grow. We lost you too soon. I love you so much and life is hard without you around. I jus hope that you are proud of me and that you are in a better place now.

I love you so so much and I miss you,
      Your granddaughter, Huston

  5. I worked with Joe at Bell Helicopter in the 60s, many years ago, and played golf with him at Fort Worth Country Club along with Carl Koch. Nancy and I visited the Soros in Blacksburg many years ago after he started at Virginia Tech. Sorry to hear he has passed away. We wish his wife the very best. They were very nice people.

  6. I was thinking of the Soros again in June 2024. It has been a very long time when we worked together at Bell Helicopter. My best round of golf was at Fort Worth Country Club where I believe they were members. When you get into your 80s you sometimes think back on all the fine people you knew. I think Joe was getting his PhD while employed at Bell. They were wonderful friends.
