Dovie Joyner Cole, 89, of 57 Lucerne Avenue, Asheville, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at her home following a one year illness.
Mrs. Cole was born September 25, 1912, in McDowell County and was a daughter of the late Crayton and Ardell Reel. At age 14 she came to Asheville to live with a sister, Mrs. Annie Cogburn, and had lived in Asheville until her death.
Dovie was married to the late Edison (Eddie) Joyner and together they were very active members of West Asheville Baptist Church. In later years, she was married to Furman Cole, who died in 1991.
She held many offices in her church and is best remembered for her cards, visits to nursing homes, and giving generously of her time and material substances. Her life goal was to help others.
She is survived by a sister, Emma Blankenship of Spindale; one brother and sister-in-law, Grover and Kathleen Reel of Marion; one step-son, F. Edwin Cole and his wife Ada of Asheville; one step-daughter, Anne Keast of Carson City,
NV; and a number of nieces and nephews including Bill Cogburn of Asheville.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James H. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and request that memorials be made to the Broyhill Home for Children or to ones favorite charity.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
She was a sweet and gentle spirit, whom I loved dearly, and will miss greatly. My 3rd son, Cole Miller, born 11/1/2001, is named after Dovie, and I am saddened that he will not get to meet the beautiful gracious lady I loved as my Aunt Dovie.
A wonderful person who will be fondly remembered & greatly missed
So sorry to hear of your death I remeber her best from Aunt Annna( Mrs MF hensley) as when they had a get together all the women after lunch went into the room where all the ladies left their hats, and proceeded with the other ladies trying on the hats. I stayed with Mrs Cogburn for awhile in 1953
I REMEMBER DOVIE SO MUCH, SHE WAS A GREAT FRIEND GROWING UP IN WEST ASHEVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH. SHE WAS ALSO A GREAT FRIEND WITH MY MOM AND DAD RUTH AND DOC QUEEN. DOVIE WAS SO LOVED AND WILL BE SO MISSED.
I remeber Dovie as the flower lady who regularly took the pulpit flowers each Sunday and distributed to the shut-ins and those WABC members in nursing homes. The memorial is absolutely true that her goal in life was to help others. May God bless and comfort Dovie’s family. Dale & Judy
Although I knew Aunt Dovie when I was quite young my memory of her is precious. My prayer is she is with Christ now and enjoying the treasures He prepared for her.
Lottie and I were sorry to learn of Dovie’s passing. She was a long-time friend and will be greatly missed. We had so much fun in the Joyful Noise Band and XYZ.
I have very fond memories of Aunt Dovie and Uncle Eddie from long ago. My parents, Jim and Virginia Maney, had many stories to share with me about the Joyner’s and Cole’s.
She will be missed by many. My sympathies go out to all who knew her.
Gaden Maney
We were saddened to hear of Mrs. Cole’s death. We lived beside her and Mr. Cole on Lucerne in the early 80’s. Our son was born during that time and he enjoyed playing and ‘talking’ to them through our bedroom window. We have such fond memories of our good neighbor.
God Bless each of You.
Kim and Susie
My memories of Aunt Dovie and
Uncle Eddie were spending many a Christmas morning with
our family. She was a walking angel on earth for many of us.
I feel so blessed for going to
see her just a few weeks ago.
I’m sure she is in a wonerful
place now,and doing the same
there as she did here,loving
people.
