David Walter Francis Lloyd
Asheville ~ David Walter Francis Lloyd, 83, died on January 3, 2018, in Asheville of kidney failure. The son of William Francis Lloyd and Nesta Piper Lloyd, David was born in Buckinghamshire, England on April 23, 1934. During WW II, David, his mother and four siblings were evacuated to Wales while his father fought on the front. With the help of Nesta’s family in Sudbury, Massachusetts, the Lloyds gained passage to the United States in 1943. At home in Sudbury, David spent a happy childhood surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins and his grandmother. In 1954, he graduated from the Northfield Mt. Herman (NMH) preparatory school and in 1958 from Tufts University. He earned additional degrees in international business from the American Institute for Foreign Trade (Thunderbird) and Webster University. His career in international marketing of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment began in Trinidad, West Indies with American Cyanamid and ended 35 years and over 100 countries later as VP of International at Reveco in Asheville (which he proclaimed to be the best place in the world to live.)
Upon retirement, David spent his time working on his small company, LabMedEx, and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, ABCCM and fundraising for the NMH School. He enjoyed hiking with the Hendersonville Club, participating in the Three Score senior group at First Presbyterian Church, the Golden K Kiwanis Club and belonging to the Pilgrim John Howland Society. All people, especially the less fortunate, he treated with respect and compassion. He was a person of quality with a penchant for making people laugh.
Mr. Lloyd is survived by Joanna, his wife of 55 years, whom he met at Tufts; his three daughters, Alice Lloyd, Elizabeth Dowling and Sarah Lloyd-Wells; his two sons-in-law, Dr. Joshua Dowling and Dr. Peter Wells; his five Dowling grandchildren, Caroline, Katherine, Emma, James and Robert, as well as David’s twin brother, Robert H.F. Lloyd.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all those who provided care for him over the past 6 months.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 21, 2018 in the First Baptist Church in Asheville. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, please honor him by planting a tree and/or sending a contribution to ABCCM, 20 Twentieth Street, Asheville, NC 28806

David was a good friend, interesting and fun to talk to. We miss his friendliness and his ready witty comments about the latest political doings.
The neighborhood is not the same without him.
David entered our lives when he married my best high school friend, Joanna. Over the years we camped, celebrated the 1976 bicentennial, and enjoyed the gift of watching our children grow to adulthood. Throughout our times together, David lightened the conversation with humor. On one visit to Ashville, David eagerly talked about his love of hiking in the nearby mountains. We also would have enjoyed hiking with him had we lived closer together.
