David B. Harrington, a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2026 at the age of 89. Born on February 23, 1937 David lived a life marked by service to God and country, creativity, and a deep devotion to those he loved. He was preceded in death by his wife Rosemarie Harrington; his parents Byrne Harrington and Louise English Harrington; his brother and sister-in-law Peter and Anne Harrington; and his sister Paula Carroll.
David was an officer in the United States Army from 1957-1979. His posts took him from numerous states on the east coast to Texas, Germany, where he met and married his wife in 1962, and Iran. They returned stateside before retiring from his military service in Virginia as a Lt Col.
He then began a career in the private sector in computer analysis for a variety of companies and organizations. Eventually he took a job with the state of Virginia as a systems analyst until, after 24 years sitting behind a desk, he decided to retire again. They relocated to the mountains of western North Carolina in Clyde.
Never one to sit still very long, David took classes in furniture making and began handcrafting pieces that adorned their home. He also taught himself the art of stained glass, learned to play the banjo in the traditional claw-hammer style, and even built himself a dulcimer. A lifelong model railroader he was often found down in the basement working on his latest track design, a hobby that brought him much happiness.
Above all else though, he was a devoted husband of 63 years to his beloved wife. He faithfully cared for her during the last 7 years of her life until she passed at home on June 30, 2025. He embodied a love and commitment that served as an example to others. David will be remembered for his great personality, warm spirit, and his gift for encouraging others. He was an exceptional role model of fatherhood, a steady presence, and made a lasting impact on his many friends and community.
He is survived by two sons, Frederick Sean Harrington and Erik Byrne Harrington, and his grandson Cole Alexander Harrington.
