Betty Alice Lanning, 73, of Lookout Rd., Asheville, peacefully went to be with the Lord surrounded by her family and music on Monday, September 23, 2013, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Madison Co., and having lived in Buncombe Co. most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Clatie Davis Griffin. She was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Dexter Lanning.
Mrs. Lanning worked for Burlington Industries. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary. She lived life on her own terms. She was an avid bingo player, and loved flea marketing, enjoying wheeling and dealing.
Mrs. Lanning is survived by her husband of 58 years, Walter Dexter Lanning; a daughter, Diane Brokowski and husband Stan; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a half brother; and two sisters.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
Her family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Uncle Dexter and Diane, I’m so sorry for your lose of your wife and mother. Aunt Alice has been sick for so long, now she is in heaven. No sickness or pain she has that same smile as always. SO Sorry to hear about my old friend. It is a sad fact of life that we lose touch with with some of the dearest people to come into our lives. A big part of my good friend memories contain Alice. Bold, loving, laughing, singing Alice…my friend.
