Barbara “Grandmother” Brookshire Bennett, age 74, passed away to her home in heaven surrounded by her family on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

Barbara was married to the love of her life, Winston Bennett, for 55 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Furman and Julia Brookshire, and sister, Sharon Dedmon.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sisters, Susie Ingle and Judy O’Dette; children, Sherri Sitton (Mike), Kerri Eaker, and Linda Towles (Brian); grandchildren, Matthew Kirkland (Bree), Jesse Sitton (Kristy), Dakota Kirkland, Julie Sitton (Sabrina), Brooke Towles (Ben), Lucas Towles and Riley Towles; and great-grandchildren, Shelby Sitton, Nova Kilby, Haley Perry, Hayley Gordiano, Bailey Perry, Evie Sitton, Addilee Sitton, Paisley Perry, Mason Kirkland and Wyatt Sitton.

Barbara retired from MAHEC as an administrative assistant from the nursing program. She was a longtime member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church. She loved her family more than anything. She so enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reading books was her passion, and she loved sharing that passion with others.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2021, in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Rev. Charlie Sams and Dr. Paul Sanchez will officiate.

Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Graveside services will be held at a later date.

  8. I worked with Barbara at MAHEC & I’m so very sorry to hear she passed away. Another coworker told me she was really sick but had no idea she had passed. She was a very sweet, hard working person. Always had a smile for everyone, she will be missed!
