Arliss Alton Sluder, 78, of Asheville, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013. A native of Buncombe Co., he was a son of the late Mark Jennings and Lucy Israel Sluder. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Francis Elkins Sluder; sister LeVenia Allen and Wylma Morgan; and brothers R. Glenn Sluder and Stan C. Sluder. Mr. Sluder was a retired truck driver for Carolina Freight. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He is survived by daughters Janet Sluder Branam of Leicester, and Tamara Sluder Galloway of Asheville; grandchildren Chase and Kendall Branam; step-grandchildren Sarah Holbrook and Joshua Galloway; sisters Marie S. Merrell and Louise Foster; and brothers Harold W. Sluder and Ronald B. Sluder. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the church. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. We were saddened to hear of Arliss’ death. I know the family will miss him dearly, as we will. We really enjoyed the many years of reunions, cabin visits, and especially the Bristol races that we attended with Arliss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.   2. I am so sorry to hear of my friend Arliss’s death. I was going to stop on the mail route and see you, but you had left me last night, Arliss. I hope you are at peace and pain free. I’ll miss all of our cutting up when I come by on the mail route, and I’ll miss all your garden vegetables you always gave me. Things certainly will not be the same.
    May all the family find comfort in the good memories that all of you had with arliss, and know that you are in my prayers.
