Agnes Bowen Johnson, 92, beloved wife of 64 years of William R. Johnson, died peacefully on December 26th. She was a cherished wife, devoted mother of 2 sons, Ray Johnson, Robert Johnson, and daughter Susan J Blackmon. Agnes had 3 grandchildren: Laura Johnson, Anna Johnson and Lou Blackmon, of whom she was extremely proud. Her extended family also includes Julie Johnson of Charlotte and John Blackmon of Atlanta.
Agnes was the one remaining living sibling of 9 children, all of whom were born in Albemarle County, Va., where she was raised on the 400 acre farm of Whitehall, in the beautiful hills of Crozet. Her parents were the late Melitus J. and Mary Maupin Bowen. She graduated in 1945 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (known as Women's' College) majoring in Home Economics.
She was a director of Food Services in Raleigh's public school system until 1948. A talented cook and seamstress, Agnes was passionate about serving delicious meals for family and for a multitude of friends, and she prepared banquets with ease her entire life. She was also passionate about her home, loved sewing and her focus was her beloved children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with their Airstream in tow. She was a lifelong Methodist, as her ancestral family began the Maupin Meeting House near Crozet Va., in the late1700s - a Methodist Church which is still in service.
Her giving and thoughtful spirit will be greatly missed by her immediate family, friends and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be held on Monday, December 30th, at 2:00, at Central UMC in Asheville, NC. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00. Interment will follow at Green Hills. Memorials may be made to the John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville.
Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road is assisting the Johnson family.

My heartfelt condolences to the Johnson family. The death of a dear loved one is so hard to bear. Knowing this, our loving merciful Father gave his Word to end death, pain and suffering. His love will strengthen you to endure your loss. Revelation 21: 4, 5. Shirley
Dear Johnson Family, We were sorry to read in the Observer that Agnes has passed away, but I know she must be rejoicing in Heaven with my father, Denham Maupin, from the same Maupin clan. We enjoyed knowing Agnes and Bill when they lived in Charlotte where my parents kept a second home. They were Virginia residents, but bought in Charlotte to be near us. Please know how much we loved and enjoyed your parents. You are in our prayers.
