Edith Gillespie Black Tweed, 84, of Leicester, went home to be with the Lord while surrounded by her family on October 30th, 2011.
Edith was born on June 14, 1927 in Buncombe County where she lived all her life. She was the daughter of the late William Pearson and Connie Brooks Gillespie. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Clifford Black, sister, Nora Mae Parham, and foster child Don Gregg.
She enjoyed the simple things in life, she loved the Lord, spending time with her family, and especially hearing her grandchildren sing. Edith was a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.
She enjoyed many things including gardening, camping, fishing, and spending time at the beach. She loved hearing the preaching and singing at South Turkey Creek Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over 60 years. She always raised her hand and testified about the goodness of the Lord.
Edith is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, G. Walter Tweed; her sons, Dennis Black and wife Robbie, Kevin Black and wife Bonnie; daughters Darlene McCurry and husband Don, and Kathy Teague and husband Melvin; stepdaughter Angela Hensley and husband Billy; and foster daughter, Linda Scott. Edith is also survived by her brothers, the Rev. Russell Gillespie, Paul Gillespie; sisters Lois King, Ruby Briggs, and Marjorie Black. She was a loving grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Her kind words and loving spirit will always be a living testimony to her family.
A Home Going Celebration will be held at South Turkey Creek Baptist Church on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Steve Rogers and the Rev. C.J. Duvall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave.

I am so glad I got to see Edith last month. I will miss her so much.
She is part of my fondest memories of growing up next to her and her family.
