George Herman Cooper, 88, of 28 Covington Street, Asheville, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in an Asheville hospital. Mr. Cooper was born in Glen Alice, TN, and was a son of the late Joseph M. and Maude Early Cooper. He was an Army veteran of WW II after which he moved to Asheville. He was retired after 44 years with American Enka and was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Madge Bailey Cooper; one daughter, Sandra Dunn and her husband Dr. Joe Dunn of Asheville; two grandchildren, Kristie Dunn and Brad Dunn of Asheville; and one brother, Woodrow “Bill” Cooper of Canton. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Lewis and the Rev. Dr. James H. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

    Please accept our sympathy in Herman’s passing. What a great hope we have in Jesus. My short visit with Madge & Herman a few weeks ago out in the front yard was a Divine appointment of sorts. I remember seeing Herman face to face every Sunday when I was custodian when he came to ring the Sunday School bell. May the God of all comfort strengthen and comfort you during these days.
