Robert Donald Poore

Asheville Butterfly TrailMr. Poore was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Robert W. and Minerva Jane Messer Poore. During WW II and during the Roosevelt and Truman administrations he was stationed at the White House as a member of the US Army Signal Corps. He worked in the basement of the White House, traveled with the presidents and he was the operator who transmitted the order for the D-Day Invasion.
He retired in 1975 as a detective with the Asheville Police Department where he worked for 29 years. He was a member of the FOP and the American Legion and was an active member of Abernethy United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Arnell Campbell Poore; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna P. and Nelson D. Frazier of Asheville and Beverly P. and Russell Hall of Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren, Dr. Kevan Frazier of Asheville and Mary Elizabeth Hall and Christopher George Hall of Knoxville; two sisters, Bobbie P. Severson of Candler and Renith P. Lanham of San Jose, CA; and one brother, Ted Poore of Waynesville.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday at Abernethy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Patrick Welch officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Abernethy United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1418 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806.

Dear Mrs. Poore, Donna, and Beverly, it is with deep regret to learn of your husband and father’s passing away. You know we know what you are going throuhg at this time.
It is rather ironic that I was telling my husband earlier this week about, you, Donna, and the time you invited me to have supper with your family when we were kids. It was the first time I had ever had spaghetti, and it was your Daddy who made it. I never could quit get my spaghetti sauce to taste like I remembered his tasting.
I remember, also, how Mama said if it hadn’t been for the help of your Dad, that she didn’t know if she would ever have gotten the veterans benefits for us after Daddy died. Without them, I don’t know how we would have survived. I know I would never have been able to go to college without those benefits.
You each have stayed in our hearts and memories over the years. Donna, please contact me via email if you can. I would love to talk to you.
