Vergie Sluder Shook

She was a native of Buncombe County, the daughter of the late Eddie W. and Eliza Page Sluder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wiley B. Shook, who died in 1982.

Mrs. Shook was the oldest member of Grace United Methodist Church and held various offices in the United Methodist Women, of which she was a lifetime member. She was an active member of the Newfound Quilting Club and was a homemaker, seamstress, and will long be remembered by family and friends for her cookie baking.

On January 8, 1999, she was honored as “Queen for a Day” by the Blue Ridge Center. With her family in attendance she was presented with a crown and a new robe. During the celebration party she shared with her guests the story of her wedding day, 80 years ago.

Again, in January, 2000, she was honored along with three other Buncombe County residents by the Century Club for having lived in three different centuries. The Mayor and Congressman Charles Taylor were there to make the presentations.

She is survived by two sons, R. Beryl Shook of Advance, NC and Carroll E. Shook of Leicester, two daughters, Arlene Morgan and Clara Marie McIntyre, both of Leicester; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Her family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:30 pm Saturday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue where Mrs. Shook will remain until being placed in the church one hour prior to the service. At other times her family will be at the home of her son, Carroll Shook.

Pallbearers will be Edwin, Earl and Kevin Shook, David McIntyre, Neal Morgan, and Mike Towles. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons.
