Floyd “Bill” Smith, 82, of 127 Pisgah View, Asheville, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in an Asheville health care center.

Mr. Smith was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Douglas and Rebecca Davis Smith and was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Shelton and a brother, Theodore Smith. He was retired from American Enka and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Virgie Mae King Smith; one daughter, Elaine Wooten of Candler; two sons, Gary Smith of Easley, SC and Allen Smith of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, Lisa Wooten, and Scott, Mark, and Adam Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Dana Smith.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Worth Emory and Tom Pierce officiating. Burial will be at Ashelawn Gardens.

His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

  2. I have many fond memories of ‘Bill’ Smith. He was a very kind and thoughtful man.
    Growing up with his oldest son, Allen, I was around him quite often. Bill and Virgie were two very nice people I had the pleasure of knowing throughout my life. We are grateful and better people because of them.
