Reuben Canedo Mendez, 77, of Asheville, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Mendez was born in Gadsden, AZ and was a son of the late Alejandro and Delores Canedo Mendez. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force and was a former member of the National Guard. He was a retired carrier for the US Postal Service and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Travis Mendez; one daughter, Janet O’Kelley and her husband Gary of Asheville; one grandson, Ben O’Kelley; two great-grandsons, Patrick and Kyle O’Kelley; and nine brothers and sisters, Carmen Carranza of Banning, CA, Jacklen Payan of Somerton, AZ, Armida Matus, Tony Mendez, and Mary Olea of Yuma, AZ, Eleanor Mendez, Alex Mendez, and Richard Mendez of Gadsden, AZ, and Jesus Mendez of San Luis, AZ.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 am Tuesday at Green Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Charles Taylor officiating.

A memorial service followed by a reception will begin at 12:00 noon Tuesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
