Born in Richmond, VA, Mrs. Thornton was the daughter of the late George Howard Quillen and Hattie Florance Larson Quillen.
Mrs. Thornton was a Navy veteran. She resided in Elgin, IL for 18 years and Asheville, NC for 17 years and was employed by Cancer Care of WNC as a medical transcriptionist.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Ann Thornton Robertson and her husband of Killen, AL; four sons, Matthew James Thornton and his wife of Houston, TX; Richard Dale Thornton of Arden, NC; Rob Thornton and his wife of South Elgin, IL and Thomas Michael Thornton and his wife of Knoxville, TN; one brother, George Howard Quillen, Jr. of Sun Lake, AZ, and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 5 at 2:30 PM in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with Father Roger Arnsparger officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813 or to the American Cancer Society, 31 College Place, Building C, Suite 100, Asheville, NC 28801.

I knew your mother when she was a school bus driver at school district U-46 in Elgin.
She was a breath of fresh air to all of us. It has been many years since I have seen her, but she will be greatly missed by all who knew her here. With sincerest sympathy.
I worked with Ann as a Medical Transcriptionist. I loved her open and fun loving personality. I will miss her.
