CLARENCE EDWARD “SNUFFY” YOUNG WOODFIN – Clarence Edward “Snuffy” Young, 87, of Woodfin, passed to meet his Jesus on January 26, 2011 at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center. He was the sixth of eight children born to Joe Henry and Carrie Redman Young on January 7, 1924 at home in the hollow just below Woodfin High School, a stone’s throw from his Daddy’s store where all the locals gathered. Known as “Eddie” to his war buddies, he enlisted in the Marines after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, serving the Pacific Theatre including Guam, Supin Island, and TiAnn. Snuffy was one of five brothers who left the area representing Woodfin in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps of the Armed Forces during WWII. All five brothers came home in good health after the war ended, which was a significant occurrence for the time. Shortly thereafter he met and married his wife of 35 years, Edna Hicks Young, until her death in 1990, and lived near his boyhood home the rest of his life except the short months of his illness. Snuffy raised his four children as members of Riverside Baptist Church where all were baptized. He attended Newbridge Baptist Church the last years of his life. He retired from the US Postal Service after 25 years as a Letter Carrier. He remained active in his community, and even voluntarily served as Senior Citizen Treasurer, organizing several excursions for many years following retirement. His parents preceded Snuffy in death as well as his wife, Edna Hicks Young; one sister Willie Wright; three brothers Hamilton D. “Hamp” Young, Thomas Lowell “Butch” Young, John Calvin “Bo” Young; an infant brother and adopted brother Clyde Young. Snuffy is survived by his children Brenda K. Young, Steve R. Young and wife Sandra, Judy Hunt and husband Michael, Kimberly Ragan and husband Michael; grandsons Daniel Young and wife Angie, and Grant Hunt; granddaughters Ashley Young, Megan O’Kelley, and Lauren Hunt; great grandsons Andrew, Landon, and Maddox; two brothers Joe Henry “Hunky” Young and Harold R. “Rooney” Young; several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28th, 2011, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. A remembrance service for Snuffy will be held at Newbridge Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 29, 2011. Reverend Clark Henderson and Pastor Michael Brown will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Ashelawn Garden of Memory. The family will be at the home of his son Steve at 58 Jones Patton Rd. at other times. Any memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice, to whom Snuffy’s family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation.

  14. To the family of Clarence Young: I would like to send my condolences to you in the passing of ‘Snuffy.’ I’ve known him practically all my life. I remember ‘snuffy’ particularly from my high school days at Woodfin. 1953 graduate. He was always there when we were playing basketball, to give us support and to root for us. I always loved to see him standing there supporting us. Please accept my thoughts.

  15. My sympathy to all of Snuffy’s family, esp. Hunky and Rooney. The Houser family all went to school with the Youngs and thought very highly of them. Snuffy and I were friends and enjoyed our short encounters in those days. He was always smiling and had something funny to say. I am sure he will be missed in the community and all. He was a great guy.

  16. Dear Steve, Sandra and family!
So sorry to hear about SNUFFY!
Always enjoyed seeing SNUFFY at the golf course and the Woodfin ball games when FLASH and CANDICE were going to WOODFIN school!
SNUFFY was always such a great person!
Sorry I will not be able to attend services, because I have had shingles since CHRISTMAS!
MAY GOD BE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS!
    LOVE, Glenn and Helen O’KELLEY

  17. To Young Children, so sorry for your loss, but we all know what a great guy he was, and what a moral influence he was on others. Steve, and Judy, I will always remember you as good students with a great sense of humor, evidently inherited from your father. God Bless and keep in touch. Shirley Rymer Smith, Charles and family

  18. To: Snuffy’s children

I am sorry to hear, belatedly, about Snuffy’s passing. He was a fine gentleman and I am sure he is in a much better place now enjoying his reunion with loved ones already there. I was fortunate to play in the same golf foursome with him for several years until we both had to give up golf due to back problems. I received a card from him this past Christmas but as usual he was very upbeat. I had no idea he was in a nursing facility at the time. It was typical of him not to complain. May God bless and comfort each of you as you go forward with your life.

  19. Dear Steve, Sandra, & Family,
We are so sorry about Snuffy’s passing, but as Kenny said this morning, he is in Glory–he won!! May knowing he is happy and free of pain give you all comfort. We love you. Bobby & Anita

  20. Steve, Brenda, Judy and Kim, Marsha called to let me know that Uncle Snuffy had passed away. I know that he is in a better place and is with Daddy and they are both having fun in Heaven. We all have some wonderful memories of a beautiful man. My prayers are with you all as you celebrate his new health in Heaven with Jesus. I miss you all and love you very much. Take care.
