Venoy Newton Wright, 88, of Fairview, died Monday, January 15, 2001 in at Memorial Mission Hospital.
He was born in Canton, NC, August 12, 1912. After graduating from Canton High School in 1931, he worked for a short period of time at
Enka corporation and then began a 40-year journey that took him to several Caribbean Islands, Hollywood, Europe and the Mediterranean. He later shared his time between
established homes in Puerto Rico, Western North Carolina and New York City, where he was welcomed by high society.
Venoy’s love for horticulture and wildlife continued to develop during his retirement years when he actively sought out and cared for many
varieties of birds and plant life while he settled on Ballard Creek, which was pioneered by his paternal grandparents in the 1800’s.
He was one of 9 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by two brothers, Guy Wright and Robert Wright of Waynesville and Thelma Brassaw of
California. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and many devoted friends. All who knew Venoy will cherish his wisdom, optimism, youthful perspective, and love of life. He was a model of how we should live each day to its fullest. He will be missed dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cradle of Forestry, Attn.: Memorial, 100 E. Broad St., Brevard, NC 28712.
A celebration of life will be held for Venoy’s family and friends at 4:00 pm Saturday, February 17, 2001, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
Venoy always exhibited love and concern for all of our Family. Our prayers are with his loved ones at this difficult time.
To whom it may concern: We only new Venoy as a friend of the family but he just felt like one of the family.He was a unique man and always a pleasure to see or visit when we were in the area.He will be missed but our memories of him will live on.
Venoy was a very sweet man. We will miss his smile and all of the memories of my grandparents that he often shared with us. God Bless him and his family.
Venoy was a very nice man to share his doves and knowledge of them with me. We enjoyed talking about animals and their care. I learned alot from him. I will miss him.
Venoy was a very fine gentleman. He would share his love of plants with my family and I. He taught me a lot of useful information that I could use in my horticulture classes. He would always bring by one of his latest treasured plants. We will all miss him.
Thank you Venoy for your friendship, the Holidays that you spent at our house, information about my Grandparents life during the Depression, knowledge about animals and plants and the special BEGONIA that grew to over 6 feet high and was so beautiful that car loads of people were stoping to admire it.
Mr. Write was one of the nicest men that I have ever known. May the Lord comfort all the family and friends at this time of loss.

It was a pleasure to share in your last birthday celebration @ the old home place. We will sadly miss seeing you & sharing in your stories. I shall never forget your generousity & thoughtfullness concerning my future in 1952.

Thank you to all who attended the gathering of family and friends held in Venoy’s honor at Groce Funeral Home on 2/17/01. His ashes were spread where his great-grandfather may have walked when he pioneered the Ballard Creek area. A marker will be placed at his request next to his beloved brother, Vincent, at Cane Creek Cemetery, Fairview, NC.
