Asheville ~ Gilbert Lee Stevens, 88, of Asheville passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 in a local nursing home.
He was born in Hot Springs in Madison County and was the son of the late George Wallace and Dorothy Lamb Stevens.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace and Hugh Stevens and Hobert Lamb.
He was a US Army Veteran serving in the North African and European theater during WW II.
During his life he was owner of the Oteen Cab Company serving the people of East Asheville for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Rhew Stevens of Asheville; two sons, Don Stevens of Asheville and Wayne Stevens of Arden; two grandsons, Andrew and Jon Stevens; two great grandchildren; a brother, Charles Stevens of Asheville.
A family graveside memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Skyview Memorial Park in East Asheville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Asheville United Methodist Church Building Fund, 48 Browndale Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
Groce Funeral Home East Asheville on Tunnel Road is in charge of arrangements.

I Have Fond Memories As A Little Girl Riding With Lee In His Cab. Paying Me To Go With Him.My Best Memory One Day He Took The Back Seat Out Of Car And They Were Lots Of Change People Had Lost And He Give It All To Me. Being Little And Along Time Ago That Was A Lot Of Money For Candy. Years Went By And I Lost Touch With You,But Then I Found Out You Were At The Nursing Home And Came To See You Along With My Parents Frank&Theresa Norton Lee You Are Gone Now But The Memories I Have Of You Will Remain In My Heart Forever.
