James M. Stephen, 82, died Saturday, November 18, 2000, in an Asheville hospital.
A retired Chief Petty Officer on the US Navy, Chief Stephens was a son of the late Albert and Bertie Stephens. He was born in Alabama and spent his early years in Black Mountain and after retirement from the Navy resided in Charlotte and Asheville.
He is survived by one brother, Roy Stephens of St. Charles, MO, and a niece, Carla Horton of Asheville.
Private interment will be held at a later date in Mountain View Memorial Park, Black Mountain.
Memorials may be made to the US Navy Relief Society.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue in in charge of the arrangements.
