William "Smiley" Emory, Jr., of Arden, died Monday, November 8, 2010 at his residence. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late William Emory, Sr. and Nancy Ray Emory. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his companion of several years, Mary Vehorn of Asheville; a son, Roger Dale Emory and his wife, Kathleen, of Candler; one sister, Dorothy Ryan of Candler; two brothers, James Emory of Greeneville, TN and Charles Emory of Avery's Creek and two grandchildren, Dale Jr. and Hope Florence. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Thursday from 1:00 - 2:00 PM prior to the graveside service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in William's memory to the WNC Down Syndrome Alliance at PO Box 421, Weaverville, NC 28787 or www.wncdsa.org.

  4. Uncle Bill, “Bill Darling” it’s been a month shy of 13 years and you are still missed. I think of you often and have sweet memories to remember you by. Thank you for taking such sweet care of nanny, what an incredible son you were. Everyone is aging and changing so much but I’m sure you see that. Sending you a hug and a kiss, please give nanny and gramps a hug and tell them I miss them every day. Sometimes the memories simply are not enough.
