Plummer Aldophus Payne, 91, of Knoll Ridge Road, Asheville, died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Mission Hospitals. A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late James Frank and Ettie J. Sluder Payne. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Verola Worley Payne; sisters, Agnes Payne and Ruby Barefield; brothers, Clarence, Arvalee, York and Frank Payne. Mr. Payne was retired from General Motors. Survivors include a brother, Dillard Payne and a sister, Fronia Ball, both of Marion; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Bunch and her husband Bill of Candler and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Edwin Worley officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with nephews serving as pall bearers, James Ball, Bruce Payne, Gary Payne, Roger Payne, Danny Barefield, Kevin Payne, Billy Payne, and Ronnie Gowing. His family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Care Partners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

  1. I had the pleasure of being Plummer and Billy’s nurse at Heart Path many years ago. I’ve have never met a kinder spirit than Plummer, I loved him and his sweet wife Verola. My prayers go out to all his family during this sad time. Sending my love to Billy and Mary Jo especially. I was so Blessed to have had gotten to know Plummer and Billy during Heart Path class.
