John F. Holbrook
April 25, 1922 ~ March 29, 1999
Asheville Butterfly TrailMr. Holbrook was a native of Buncombe County and was a son of the late Frank and Nina Holbrook. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Holbrook, a twin brother, James Holbrook, and a sister, Margaret Long.
He was an Army veteran of WW II and was retired after 43 years with American Enka. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Judia U. Holbrook; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Rickman; a grandson, David, a great-grandson, Jacob; a sister-in-law, Hettie Holbrook; a brother-in-law, Bill Long; and two nephews, Mike and Bob Holbrook.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Norman A. Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 277 Oak Hill Road, Candler, NC 28715, or to Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center, PO Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.
I joined John and James in the third grade at
good old Sand Hill School. Miss Florence White
was our teacher, and Claude C. Marr was
the head Honcho. (Principal, to the uninitiated).
J. & J. & I were together one more year, then
I skipped a grade, which made me finish
SHHS in 1938.
After almost 70 years now, my memory is
what I use to forget things with, but it seems
to me that the boys had real crusher hand shakes –
the result of having to get up real early every
AM to hand milk the cows at their dairy!
Have in my possession a copy of good photo
of one of them taken at a wing-ding at the Enka
Lake Club just a fww years ago. Th guy looked 20
years younger than he really was!
