Daniel F. Denton Arden – Daniel Franklin Denton, 78, of Arden, went to be with his Lord Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of McDowell County, he was a son of the late Daniel B. Denton and Jimmie Jo Denton and Sarah “Bessie” Denton. Dan graduated from Lee Edwards High School, attended Asheville-Biltmore College and N.C. State University. He retired as a supervisor with the National Climatic Data Center after 31 years of service. He was a member of Arden Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and church treasurer over past years and was a veteran of the US Marines serving in the Korean War. He had a life-long interest in photography and during his younger years he worked for Tip Top Photo. Dan was lovingly known as “Poppaw” to his dear family. He will be terribly missed by them and his many good friends and neighbors. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, MaryAnne Sprouse Denton; a son, Brian Douglas Denton of Durham; a daughter, Dana Lynne Denton of Brevard; two granddaughters, Erin Utter Powell and Anna Michele Utter and two precious great-grandchildren, Joseph Ryan Powell and Emma Grace Powell. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Arden Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Davis, Weaver Swain, Balus Chastain, Odell Sluder, Coy Massey, Jeff Bridges, Ted Meadows and members of the R.O.M.E.O. (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, December 28, 2009 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Mission Fund of Arden Presbyterian Church or to CarePartners Health Services of Asheville.

  15. My heart goes out to the Denton family upon the loss of their patriarch. I only know some of Mr. Denton’s children, but I am sure their love of life, intelligence, humor and grace are a definite reflection of their father. I extend my sympathies to you all.
