During his youth he participated in many sports. He achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout before graduating from high school. 4. Darlene and family, Sorry to hear about your son. You can be proud of his devotion to serve his county, we are thankful for that. May God comfort you and guide you thru this.

  5. I was so saddened to hear the news about GB’s death. I always thought so much of him by his sportsmanship, accomplishments with ROTC and pleasant smile. The entire community was proud to see him enter the Air Force Academy and pursue his desire to be a pilot. Your family has sacrificed so much so that we can enjoy the way of life we all take for granted. My prayers are with you all.

  6. Dear George Bryan Houghton Family,

I am writing to your family to tell you how sorry I am for your loss, I can’t officially say that I know your husband /son / brother. But I had the very special opportunity of meeting him once a few weeks ago at the air show at Hill Air Force Base. I am very patriotic and LOVE airplanes, and my favorite jet is the F-16! I am 30 years old and have two young children, Brooklyn 4 and Ammon who is 18 months. My kids have been indoctrinated by me, and yell and scream every time an airplane can be seen flying!

I had planned to go to this Air show for a very long time, and was excited to get my children up close to these awesome planes. When we went to the air show we wandered around the different displays, and then I had to go see the F-16’s! When we got up next to the plane in these pictures I met your husband / son / brother! He was way nice to me and my kids, I am a total nut so I stood next to him for a good 20-30 minutes until my wife reminded me that we had to go meet up with other family that were saving our seats for the Thunderbirds! I remember asking him how old he was & how long he had been flying the F-16. I also asked him about the F-22 and how I thought the F-16 was still better and could probably be just as good as the F-22 if they made the right modifications. His reply was that he was really looking forward to flying the F-35 someday! I continued to quiz him on the capabilities of the F-16, and what it was like to fly it! He answered all of my questions and never made me feel uncomfortable or like I was annoying him. I loaded all of these pictures and more on my facebook account and on my wife’s blog that she runs for our family the night we got home from the air show!
The caption read below this picture on my facebook account:

“here we are talking with an actual F-16 pilot, he was way cool and answered all of my MANY questions, I seriously talked to this guy for like 20 minutes Sarah said it was more like 30! He is only 28 years old! He is my HERO!”

My wife took the picture of me talking to him and posted this caption below the picture on our family blog,

“here Bryan is talking to this F-16 pilot! The man he wishes he could be!”

I remember looking at him in admiration and feeling good about America again, I am not real happy with some of the ways our country is being run currently. But I remember thinking to myself that we are going to be o.k. when we have guys like that protecting this country! We have had F-16’s going over our house late at night 10:00 pm – 1:00 am and I remember thinking, I wonder if one of those is that nice guy we got to meet up at the air show?

I can’t begin to imagine the pain and heart ache that you all must be feeling! I lost my brother when I was young and remember how horrible that was. I don’t want to get too mushy or religious on you guys, but I want you to all know that I know that God lives, and that Jesus is the Christ. I also know that there is life after death, and that we will again be reunited with those that have passed before us. I have had many precious experiences with my brother and my grandfather who also passed away that leave me with no reason to doubt that they are fine and that we will be reunited with them again! I believe that G.B. Houghton has more important things to do for the Lord and that is why he had to go when he did.

I will never forget him, and the sacrifice that he has made for our country that I so dearly love! It is because of brave men like him that we are free! “God be with you til we meet again” is one phrase that brings peace to me in situations like this. May God bless all of you with comfort and peace, and with special experiences and knowledge that will help you rest assured knowing that G.B. Houghton is in a better place and that you WILL see him again!

Please know that your family will ALWAYS be remembered in my prayers and the prayers of my family going forward!

    With much gratitude,

    Bryan Young

    • Bryan. Thank you for these thoughts. They meant so much to me when you wrote them so soon after GB’s tragedy and they still comfort me so many years later. I have returned to them many times over the years.
Thank you so much for these incredible words of comfort.
      Caryl Houghton (George-Bryan’s aunt)

  7. Dear Houghton family,

I cannot begin to express to you how much my husband Bobby and I miss your son. Bobby (‘Chico’) was was a member of the 421st Fighter Squadron at Hill with George and Josie is one of my closest friends. I can say that he was truly an exceptional man and always had a smile on his face everywhere he went. He was very proud that he was serving his country and was so excited to be headed to Afghanistan with the guys. He spoke frequently of his family and brothers and I can say that I witnessed a great marriage between George and Josie. We feel like we’ve lost a great friend and there is a giant void in the squadron without George’s presence. Please know we will be praying for your family and thinking of you often.

    With the heaviest heart,
    Carrie and Roberto (Bobby) Flammia

  8. George, Darlene, and Family.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of GB death. I know you are proud of him for serving our country like he did. I know he will always be your hero as well as ours. He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time and always.
…for the Lord shall be thine
    everlasting light, and the days
of thy mourning shall be ended.
    Isaiah 60:20
    May you remember always
    that, for every sorrow,
    there is comfort…
    for every sadness,
    there is healing…
    for each loss–
    the promise of new life.
    Nancy Wright Sluder and Family

  9. Patty and I (next door neighbors of the Carters) were shocked and saddened to hear about the tragic accident. Please know that you all are in our hearts and prayers.

  10. Dear Houghton Family,

I am terribly saddened at the news of the loss of GB. I was fortunate enough to get to know him through JROTC at Enka High School. I came to both respect and admire him as a future AF officer and as an individual of great talent and character. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time. He most certainly left his positive impact on this world and he will be missed.

    Sincerely,
    Rachel Hubbard

  11. Josie and the Houghton family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I lost my beloved husband, Capt Nathanael J. Doring, USMC while we were both deployed to Iraq. I understand the depths of your loss. Josie, you are not alone, I unfortunately know many women and men that have lost their best friend and spouse in the service. You and the Houghtons are in my thoughts and prayers. Semper fi, Lisa Doring

  12. Dear Houghton Family,
My heart breaks for you at the loss of GB. George & Darlene, we’ve known each other since high school and I was honored that you trusted me to teach your boys. I can still see GB im my Chemistry and AP Chemistry class. He was very bright with a promising future. His mischevious smile and sense of adventure reminded me that science need never be dull. I know you are very proud of GB, Daniel, and Patrick and there are no words I can write that will make the pain go away. But, know that I am truly greiving for you and will lift you up in prayer daily. May God hold you and the Holy Spirit comfort you.
    Love in Christ,
    Mary Ann

  13. Dear Houghton family…

I was a senior GB’s freshman year at EHS – both of us were in the AFJROTC program under Chief Fowler and the late Colonel Green. GB was such a wonderful young man! While attending the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO GB was able to come over to my home a few times and have dinner with my family; as my ex husband was stationed at Ft Carson just a mere 25 miles south of the academy. It was always a pleasure having GB at the house. Maybe it was a since of someone familiar from ‘back home’ but I think we both were relieved the times he was allowed to come and visit; even though the visits were short and few and far between. Even though he was just a few years younger than me he always addressed me as ma’am and always displayed the integrity and character that the US military expects from those who serve. Over the years we lost touch but I have always held him in high regard and with the utmost respect. I was saddened to hear the news of his death but at the time time think that he ‘touched the face of God’ doing what he loved; flying!

GB was the all American boy who grew up to be an all American hero!

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.

    Tara Reese

  14. GB was a great friend and I know I’m a better man for knowing him. I’m having a hard time coming to terms with this tragedy and realize I will never get the chance to serve with him. I will pray for his parents and brothers. Best of luck to both Daniel and Patrick in their careers. Thank you for your friendship and all the memories GB. You will always be missed.

  15. Darlene & family, we were heart broken to hear of GB’s passing. We’ve prayed for Daniel’s recovery and this was so unexpected. It’s hard to know what God’s plan is, but we know that He has a reason for everything and He now has GB with Him where he is safe, happy and free of this life. Our thoughts & prayers are for all of you and we’ll continue to keep Daniel in our prayers for his full recovery and for Patrick’s safety as well.
Thank God for these young men and their willingness to serve our country.
    Love & prayers
    Mike & Kathy Mashburn

  16. George is a dear friend to Shelly and me. We cherish the time that we spent with George and Josie. I have too many stories to share for the space that is allowed. We loved him so much and he will be dearly missed. We take great comfort in knowing that he was a strong christian man. Our condolences go out to his family and to Josie as he has been called home. Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for a friend. John 15:13. For this, we will be forever grateful.

  17. George, Darlene and family, sincere sympathy to all of you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I too have a step-son in the military who is getting ready for his fourth tour in Iraq. I can’t imagine what it must be like for you to have lost your beloved son in such a tragic manner. Only God can ease your pain. Only God can grant you peace and only God can fill this void. I pray God grants all of this to you and yours in the days, weeks, months and years to come.

  18. To the Houghton Family,
We are so sorry to hear about your tragic loss. We didnt know him personally, but we know that he came from a great family. We are lifting your family up in prayer.
    Always,
    The Frisbee Family

  19. George, Darlene, Josie, Daniel, and Patrick:

I can’t begin to express my sincere sympathy for your loss. I can only imagine what you must be feeling regarding the loss of your son/husband/brother. I knew GB quite well, as we grew up in Candler Elementary and the Enka-Candler Fire Department together. I always knew he would go military, and seeing him in his ROTC uniform only further confirmed that. GB will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched, mine being one. I can personally say that I am much better for having known him. I will continue to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

  20. Darlene, George and family:

  21. Josie:
I am so sorry for your loss. George was a very special man. He always had a smile on his face, it is one of the things I will remember the most about him. He was a huge asset to the 84FTS and an outstanding pilot. I have many memories of him on our roof, at our scavenger hunts, and just around the base. He will be missed by many. May God help you through this. You are and will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

  22. Dearest George and family, We are truely sorry to hear of your son’s passing. We never had the pleasure of meeting him but he seems like he was a beautiful person inside and out.I look at him with much graditude and apperication for giving his life for something he was so proud to be a part of.You are in our thought’s and prayer’s.

  24. G.B. was such a wonderful person, he always had a smile on his face and always a kind word to say, I’ve been in classes with G.B. since kindergarten and Co- Commander’s in ROTC with him in highschool. He is a soul that will be missed and never forgotten. I was deeply saddened to hear that he had passed, emotionally distraught is more of the correct term. His family is the sweetest family and they have been through so much already. I know that everything happens for a reason and G.B. was definitely doing what he loved to do and died in honor of our country. I’m sure that he served his purpose in life and was needed somewhere else more than here on earth, but he was a great friend that will be deeply missed but never forgotten. To the family, you are loved by everyone and we all have our arms around you, we will all be here for you whenever you need anything. You should be very proud of the wonderful men that you have raised, you did an amazing job! R.I.P. G.B. We love you!

  25. Darlene, George, and family, We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. It is an honor to know your son, like many others, devoted his life to his country. Please accept our condolences.

  26. Dear Family, I do not know any of you personally but I feel a close kinship to you. So far God has seen fit to bring my dear ones back safe, but that does not mean my heart isn’t aching for you as you greive for your precious one.
My tears are blending with yours and my heart is heavy with your sorrow.I know the pain of saying so long for now to a child as well as a wonderful husband I was married to for six weeks short of 68 years. Two years and thirty five minutes before he went to meet the Lord my youngest daughter
    went before him
I am so thankfful for the part of our youth that has not been taken in by the satanic ways some have gone. I know we are all in God’s hands and you all will be in my prayers as I pray daily for our militery and their families, as I have walked the pathway of watching those steps head toward a
plane that may not bring them back. I now have a great grandson serving in the Coast Guard, one who is a helicopter pilot, one who just returned and a grandson-inlaw
who just returned from 12 months duty. I am almost 86 years old and
have lived through more of our comflicts than I would have liked to, but I am so proud of the young people like yours that love God and our country enough to stand up and give their all for the most wonderful garden spot of the world.
My granddaughter has helped to ferry some of our troops into Kuwait and felt such sadness but when she helped to bring them home again , it was one of the most wonderful experiences of her life
May you all find peace and comfort
in God’s Grace and love and know
there are many of us who still beleive in what your wonderful loved one did and what joy it will be to meet them again !
    God Bless

  27. GB was a fine person and I am proud to call him a friend. I just saw him at the class reunion last fall and commetned to my wife what a class act that he was.

  30. George & Darlene,

Terri and I extend our deepest sorrows for you and your family on the loss of GB. We have enjoyed so much watching them grow up from young boys to young men. Their desire and willingness to serve their country in beyond our human abilty to understand. I thank you and GB and the other two sons for their love of this country and protection of it. The sacrifice GB has made is an honor above and beyond human. To us he is a ‘HERO’.

We love you and ask that our Lord and Savior be with you during this time of sorry.

  34. Darlene, George, Daniel and Patrick,
I have had the joy of watching all those sweet Houghton boys grow into remarkable men. As parents, I know you are so proud of your sons. GB will always be remembered for his strong beliefs and commitment to his country and family. As Christians we know that this life is not the end. We can look forward to a glorious reunion. May God comfort you during this time.

  35. Dear Houghton family and Josie,

My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. George was my number two in Stan Eval after I had been out of the squadron for almost a year and a half due to job and deployments. He kept me out of a lot of trouble office wise and was crucial to spinning me back up to an effective squadron member. In the air, he was amazingly knowledgeable and extremely skilled. On land, he was a great friend, cheerful at social gatherings, and a true American patriot. He will be missed dearly by the many people who are better off by having known him… like myself. For some reason, his work on this Earth was finished and he now watches over all of us on high. I only hope that there is a little bit of comfort in that… certainly not enough to take all the pain away. I thank you and God for allowing me some time with him on the Earth. He will continue to be a great friend and inspiration to me.

Much love and God Bless all of you,
    Kevin Williams
    KAF, Afghanistan

  36. Judy and I have your family in our prayers each and everyday. You are a special family and so filled with love and kindness. We want you to know even though we are many miles from you we walk with you in this time of great loss and deep sorrow. You know only too well the true cost of our freedom.
    Jim and Judy Durham

  37. I went to high school with GB; actually more than that — we were in many classes throughout many grades together. He was always very kind, genuine and without pretense. I have to admit that through the years since graduating high school I have lost touch with pretty much everyone, having now settled in the UAE for work; however, I have never forgotten anyone. Especially GB. Words can not express the sadness I feel for the loss America has suffered in this patriotic young man and even more so, the loss his family is feeling. If only for a moment may my words bring you some comfort; hollow and short as it may be. You have lost a truly great person and you have my thoughts, my prayers and my sympathies.

  38. JOANNE,HERSHEL,THE HOUGHTON’S AND GB’S WIFE,SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS,,HE WAS AND IS A HERO,HE LOST HIS LIFE WHILE PROTECTING OURS,,GOD HAD OTHER PLANS FOR HIM,,,HE IS IN A BETTER PLACE,JOINING OUR FAMILY THAT HAS GONE ON,,WHAT A REUNION THAT WILL BE WHEN WE GET THERE..I AM KEEPING DANIEL’S RECOVERY IN MY PRAYERS,AND PATRICK THAT GOD WILL LOOK OVER HIM AND KEEP HIM SAFE…CHERISH THE MEMORIES THEY ARE FOREVER..MUCH LOVE A COUSIN WHO LOVES YOU ALL VERY MUCH,,FAMILY MEANS SO MUCH TO ME,,ANYTHING I CAN DO,JUST CALL ME I AM HERE FOR YOU…I CANNOT EASE YOUR PAIN,,BUT PRAY GOD TO PUT HIS ARMS AROUND YOU AND COMFORT YOU…
HE WILL NEVER LEAVE US OR FORSAKE US..YOU HAVE MY LOVE AND MY PRAYERS. JEAN PARHAM

  39. To The Houghton Family,
My heart aches for you and I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child, grandson or brother. It has been awhile since I saw you but will always remember your family. Your in my thoughts, my heart and my prayers.

  40. Dear George and Darlene,
From Boy Scouts to ROTC, I remember a young man full of potential, ambitions, character, and a moral fiber which many others are lacking. GB will always be an inspiration to all who have had the priviledge and honor of knowing. He was a good friend to Matthew. Roger and I cannot know the pain which you feel, but we want you to know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

  42. George was one of my UPT instructors in Joker Flight in 2005. Sharp dude! Flew my formation solo flight vs. him–was the best, most memorable flight in pilot training! We all remember him as a sharp and exceptionally competent officer, pilot, and instructor who will be greatly missed.

  43. I was so sorry to hear about GB,he was a very sweet young man,and I will keep you in my prayers.

  44. Dear Houghton Family,

I did not know Capt. Houghton. My nephew Brock Roden sent information about the plane crash. He is a PJ and in the same squadron out of Valdosta as Capt. Houghton’s younger brother.
Its so hard to try and say the correct words, but please know that I thank your son for being there to protect us all. I pray that God will give you comfort, and hold you close to him in this time of need.

  45. Dear George and Darlene,

All I can say is my heart cries out for the pain and loss you are feeling. I would never wish on the two of you. Just know I wil keep you in my prayers. Love to you and your family.

  46. So sorry to hear of your son’s death.Who would have thought,George, when you worked at Enka Shell, that you and Darlene would have raised such fine boys. God bless.

George and Darlene you did a fantastic job in raising 3 wonderful men and I know you are very proud of all they have accomplished. God Bless you all.
Love and prayers are with you–Dawn Miller

  49. To the Houghton Family,
Though time may someday ease the pain in our hearts, it will not dim our memories of GB. Of the thousands of people he touched with his grin, his words, and his actions, all of them will always be grateful that they knew him, if only for a short time. He was an outstanding Air Force officer and pilot, dedicated 100% to serving his country. We cannot replace him, but we hope there are others who will try to reach the same high standards he set for himself.
May the strength of your family, and your faith help you through this painful time. Along with all the rest of us, the Enka Corps of Cadets will proudly honor the memory of Captain George-Bryan Houghton.
    Respectfully,
Lt Col Dove and Chief Eagle, Enka JROTC

  50. The Houghtons and the Greene family,
Our hearts break for you at this time. Words are not comforting enough. Rest in knowing that GB is happy, healthy and flying all over heaven with the angels. God gave you three wonderful sons and you took that blessing and created three incredible men. What a wonderful accomplishment as parents. We love and pray for each of you daily that God will strengten and comfort you.
Love, Jerry, Pat, Judy, Karen, and Charles Sharpe

  51. Josie and family,

Marianne and I are so very sorry for the loss of ‘Ice’. He was beloved in the 421st Black Widow Squadron, and it will take time to fully comprehend his loss. So many prayers have been said here in Utah. We were honored to have had the opportunity to have met so many of Ice’s family. God Bless You.

  52. George, Darlene, and Family
Words are inadequate to express the grief and loss that I know all of you are experiencing at this time, but I just want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you now. I never knew George-Bryan personally, but George, I have heard you talk about him and I could tell how proud you were of him and what he had accomplished. You made it sound like he was doing what he loved to do. May God’s comfort be ever present with you and all the family.

    Tony Shuler

  53. Dear Houghton Family,
GB certainly grew up to be a remarkable young man. Just reading the postings from his fellow officers and others attest to the fact that he loved what he was doing.

  56. Dear Houghton family, as a mother who also has a son in the USAF, my heart cries out for you and your loss. I am sure there are no words that can begin to describe how you feel. Judging from the comments, your son, brother, husband must have been an amazing man. He has made the ultimate sacrifice for his country and in doing so, has had a hand in all of us being able to maintain our freedoms. I want to thank you for his service and your sacrifices in supporting his chosen path. He will forever be a hero. I never met him, but I feel close to him and you because of who he was and what he stood for. May God give you all peace and comfort in knowing that he is truly a hero. Now that his earthly job is done, know that he is now on his true mission as one of God’s angels watching over all those that love him. You will be in my prayers, as will all our military men and women and their families. God bless you all and we will pray that He will soon bring peace so that all our young men and women can come home and no more families will have to endure your heartache. Hold steadfast to God, He will see you through this darkest time and will lift you up into the light of His love.

  57. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Houghton, Mark-Daniel, Patrick, and Josephine,

I had the privilege of meeting George-Bryan (and other members of the family) in 2003, when I was volunteering for the Asheville Citizen-Times. George-Bryan was flying into the Asheville airport, and after he landed, I interviewed him briefly about his passion for flying and his fervent wish to use this passion for the greater good of the nation. I remember him distinctly. He exuded warmth and good humor and kindness, even to a stranger like me. I’m shaken to find that he has passed. I offer my deepest condolences to you all, in this difficult time of grief and sorrow.

The world was lucky to have had the grace of his presence for twenty-nine years.

    Love,

    Ripple Patel

  63. Mrs. Houghton–I was so saddened this morning to turn on the news and hear of your tragedy. Immediately, my memory took me back to Johnston Elementary where we taught together in the 90s. You should be so proud of the men your boys have become. My prayers go out to you and your family.

  78. To GB’s family,

I’m not gifted with the right words to say, but my heart is heavy for you at this time. I am thankful for families like yours…you have raised your boys to be such awesome contributors to our community and country…and for that I am grateful. I have included a poem that has given me comfort over the past three years. I hope it can bring some small amount of comfort to you.

‘The Plan of the Master Weaver’

Our lives are but fine weavings
    That God and we prepare,
Each life becomes a fabric planned And fashioned in His care.
We may not always see just how
    The weavings intertwine,
But we must trust the Master’s hand
    And follow His design,
For He can view the pattern
    Upon the upper side,
While we must look from underneath
And trust in Him to guide’?

    Sometimes a strand of sorrow
    Is added to His plan,
And though it’s difficult for us,
    We still must understand
That it’s He who fills the shuttle,
It’s He who knows what’s best
So we must weave in patience
And leave to Him the rest’?

Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
    Shall God unroll the canvas
    And explain the reason why–
The dark threads are as needed
    In the Weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

  79. Dear Houghton Family,

Ever since my Mother informed me of the passing of G.B. I have been thinking of you all. I was in H.S. with both G.B. and Daniel. I was fortunate to also meet your family as well. I was commenting to my family the many fond memories of 4th of July gatherings at your house, with all the boys. I know G.B. gave great importance to serving his country well. Moreover, his sincerity in his belief of service to country was inspiring to others. Although we are not in the military, as I write this from Mexico City while my husband works for the Department of State at the US Embassy, I can assure you that my family too understands some of the many sacrifices that he made to serve and appreciate that service. We give our sincerest condolences. You are all in our prayers.

    Hugs,

  80. My thoughts and prayers are with the Houghton family. GB will forever be remember for the times I spent with him in JROTC. GB was the best at everything he did and held that wonderful ability to pull others along with him. I’ll never forget his kindness nor his dedication to his country. Rest well GB.

  81. George, Darlene, and Family,
No words could begin to even express how much our heart breaks for all of you. Just know all of you are in our hearts, thoughts, and, prayers. We love you.

  82. George and Darlene / Herschel and Joann – We can’t begin to imagine what you are going through. Our prayers and our thoughts have been with you and your family.

  83. George, Darlene, Josie and Family
At times like this words are such an inadequate expression for the loss that I know all of you are experiencing at this time but, we want you to know that you have been in our thoughts and prayers for many days since hearing of George-Bryan’s death. We never really knew GB personally, but George and our neighbor Wendell had spoken about him and your other two sons many times.
GB was doing what he loved to do and was so proud of serving his country and living his dream of flying. Many of us never get to do or accomplish what he had in his life. You can be proud of GB and as American’s we should be proud to have young men such as GB, Daniel, Patrick and the soldiers serving our country and making it a priorty in their lives as we live in a time of such uncertainty these days. May God comfort and bless all the family and may all your wonderful memories of GB bring smiles and peace to your hearts. God Bless You.

  84. George and Family,

  85. George, Darlene & sons –
We are so sorry for the sacrifice & loss of your oldest son. You’ve been in our prayers & continue to be – may God bless you abundantly and bring you needed strength,

  86. Dear Houghton Family,
Our paths may possibly have crossed in 2006-07 at a NC AFA Parents Club meeting. Our son, Nathan, is a 2007 AFA grad stationed at Shaw AFB but currently deployed to Qatar. We also lost our 15 year old daughter in a horrible auto accident in Nov. of 2004.

Our hearts are broken for you as we truly know the sorrow, pain, and sadness that accompany the loss of a child. Just watching the news last night and seeing the motorcade come into Asheville was a painful, sobering reminder of the immense danger our military men and women face each hour of every day no matter if they are deployed or in a training activity.

To you, as parents, THANK YOU for raising these awesome sons who are, and were, so willing to serve our country even to the point of sacrificing their own lives.

We pray that God’s abiding love and the sweet memories of your son will heal your hearts and bring peace and comfort in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. You will be in our thoughts and prayers for your visitaiton tonight and the memorial service on Saturday.

    In Christian Love,
    Chuck & Rebecca Setzer

  87. George,Darlene,Daniel,Patrick,
Words cannot express the emptiness you must feel by losing such an honorable Son and brother. But you can go forward knowing how great he was and all he accomplished in his life. Not only did he serve our country to protect our freedom but he had the honors or training others to follow in his footsteps. As an ex-Marine and Viet Nam veteran, I salute ‘GB’ and appreciate all he has done for this country and wish there were more young men like him. There is no doubt that Daniel and Patrick will follow him in their military ranks to keep his dream alive and to protect this wonderful country we call home. May God be with you during these next few days to soften the burden you will have to go through.
    With highest respect.
    David Williams

  88. I remember all through my elementary school years hearing about George-Bryan’s love for flying. Your Mom was very proud of her 3 boys. It was such fun when she would bring you guys into class with her and we played games. The fondest of memories were made during our elementary years although we didn’t attend school together, we had fun when you came with her. I will always remember the inspiration you were in my life Darlene and what joy the boys brought to your face when you talked about them.
My prayers and whole heartedly thoughts are with your family. The streets of gold are a place I long to walk and rejoice in knowing that some day I will play games with George-Bryan as I did then. (((Hugs and Prayers)))

  89. George and Diane there are no words that can ever express the hurt in our hearts for your loss If we can assist you in any way please just let us know You are in our prayers Midge and Rick Luce

  90. Darlene,

  91. God Bless your family and the sacrifices they have made. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  92. George, Darlene, Daniel, Patrick, Aunt JoAnn & Uncle Herschel,
God Bless you. Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy go out to each of you. Thank you for raising sons that are fighting for our country and for us. George paid the ultimate price. but it was not in vain. He died for a purpose. A meaning. He died for all of us. Remember..God said: I will never leave you alone. Days when you feel your heart can’t take it. I will be the one to make you strong. I’ll be there to help you carry on. I will never leave you alone. Before any of you shed one tear…George was looking at the face of God. He was kneeling at Jesus’s feet. How wonderful to know you will see him again. I Pray God gives you peace and comforts you in the days and weeks ahead. Love to you all.

  93. Houghton family

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family in your time of need. Your family gives so much for others. And we appreciate all the sacrifices made. 94. George, Darlene, Daniel, Patrick and Josie,
I had the pleasure of meeting GB once in Nick and Patrick’s room at the AF Academy during Parent’s weekend. I know what a fine man that he was and appreciate his service to our country. He was a true American hero. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. My heart truly breaks for you. I know you are a family of strong faith and that God will be with you to strengthen and comfort you during these times. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Just as GB earned his wings on Earth I know that he now has his wings in heaven. God Bless each of you!

  95. All educators in Buncombe County Schools mourn the loss of one of our brightest stars. May you take comfort in knowing that GB’s legacy will be, in part, as a role model for other bright, patriotic young men and women in his home county.

  96. Houghton Family, Joann & Herschel
We can’t say we know what you’re going through because we don’t. We have never experienced the loss of a child, grandchild or spouse. We can only imagine the pain, heartache and suffering weighting heavily upon your heart. Rest assured that God loves you and will see you through this valley you’re going through. May His comfort be yours today and in the days to come. Know that we care and will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers. We’re here for you anytime you feel the need for someone to talk to, cry with, pray with or laugh with of the memories you hold dear in your heart. We’re just steps away. Our deepest sympathy.

  97. Ice/George,

Right now your body is being interned to its final resting place. As IGoR said, ‘the ripples of emotion your passing created are worldwide.’ While IGoR mourns your passing from Iraq, we of the 421st will mourn you today in Utah and soon honor your legacy in Afghanistan.

At your memorial at Hill AFB, Col ‘Zot’ Dennis said that us pilots ‘breath life’ into the mighty F-16. Ice, you breathed life into the 421st Fighter Squadron. There is not a Black Widow that you did not make an impact on. For me, the friendship we developed was truly treasured. As our desks migrated closer together, eventually working next to each other, my morale in the squadron shot up. A day of queep (paperwork) became an opportunity to share time with a true friend and I thank you for that. Spaz and I have now become the two amigos (He misses you greatly) but the space between our desk where you used to be has become a cement that will bond us as friends for life.

Now we must focus on the war. As the 421st steps out the door to Afghanistan, we wear your name on our sleeves as well above the gunport on the jets. At your memorial, when I saw your name over the gun, I promised myself that every time I climb into the cockpit I will take a moment to dedicate the sortie to you. While I was focused before, I can promise you now that every fiber in my being will be focused on safely and effectively completing the mission.

With that in mind, I truly believe we are going to save a lot of lives over there. The night you passed, Josie waited up for you. Instead of you walking through that door, Goose came to deliver the devastating news. The Black Widows are going to work hard so the next wife who sleeps quietly in bed will not be interrupted. Instead, she will wake up the next day to the sound of her husband’s voice from far off lands and will be able to mark another day off the calendar until their eventual reunion.

George, Josie, your family and the 421st will get that reunion, we are just going to have wait a little bit longer.

    Blue Skies Ice,

    Capt Roberto ‘Chico’ Flammia
    421st Fighter Squadron

  100. George and Darlene, I know it has been a long time in seeing you, but in times at these, there is comfort in knowing that people are thinking and praying for you during your loss. 102. So sorry to hear of another tragic loss in the Houghton Family. We knew him as a young boy through his grandmother, Martha. He was very dear to her as well as many others. We appreciate his service to our country. We remember her telling us that he wanted to be a pilot as a young child. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Jackie Plemmons Elmore and Sonya Plemmons Penland.

  103. George, Darlene, Daniel, Patrick and Josie –

I am so saddened by the lost of such an amazing man. GB had such a wonderful smile and was always nice to his friend’s ‘annoying little sister’. I have such fond memories of him and the entire Houghton family. I looked up to GB in JROTC and then found a great friendship in Daniel. God has called another angel home to watch over the rest of us. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    Love,
    Amber

  104. I just learned of your loss today and my thoughts are with the entire Houghton family. I had the pleasure of being an assistant scout leader while the boys were involved and they all have exceptional character.I remember GB working on his Eagle project and what a great mentor he was to the younger scouts. We have lost a great young man but he is now soaring like an eagle in the hands of God. May God grant your wonderful family peace and blessings at this trying time.

  105. Houghton Family,

We are sorry for the loss of GB, and we thank you all for him, and his comittment to serve. We ask God to give you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

  111. Thanks to Carla Dimmitt & Sam Sox, I learned about the great service given to Captain Houghton. On behalf of the Preddy brothers and their foundation, I extend our deepest sympathy.

  112. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Capt. Houghton. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.

  113. We grieve with you and for you. Nothing is worse than the un-natural order of death as that of a child before his parents. We feel your sorrow and pray that you will take solace in God’s loving arms. God bless.

  114. I want you to know that I feel your pain very deeply from a parent’s point of view but I also know how very proud you must be of GB and all of his accompolishments in such a short span of life. Cherish all those memories you have and I hope that someday instead of the sorrow and pain you feel now, they will become sweet and dear to your heart. From all I have read and seen he was a man to behold to many people. Be proud that he was loved and respected by so many.

  115. I had the privilege of meeting GB during through a mutual friend. When I met him, he was in his first year at the Air Force Academy. Within a few minutes I knew he was thrilled to be starting the road to living his dream. Over the next several years, he was more and more excited each time I saw him. I understood a portion of this excitement as I watched the camaraderie between he and his fellow pilots during his wedding weekend in Colorado Springs. Unfortunately, this was the last time I saw GB. I was saddened to hear of the loss of such a genuinely wonderful person. Regretfully, I realized I would miss his service as I read about it on this website at exactly 2:00pm Saturday. As I read the many well wishes, I began to hear jets flying overhead. I ran outside my home and watched ‘GB’s jets’ circle in preparation for the fly over. As rain began to drizzle and chills came over me, I felt an overwhelming sense of an honorable man’s presence. I only hope that his loved ones can find peace knowing the wonderful footprint he left on this world.

  116. George, Darlene, Daniel & Patrick
My thoughts and prayers are with all the family during this time of grief. I have been there–I understand. Losing my beloved son a few months ago, has left a hole in my heart that will not heal. God bless all of you, is my prayer. Love, Martha Wolfe

  117. We appreciate George’s friendship, dedication and spirit. He will be greatly missed and always remembered. Sending you much love during this difficult time,

  122. Darlene and George,
I was so sorry to hear of your loss. What a wonderful son. I remember when the scholarships were given out to the graduates of the class of 98 and how proud you were of GeorgeBryan. He was an example to many. Kendra spoke highly of him during high school. My prayers have continued for you and your family. May God give you blessings, peace and memories abundantly.

  123. Caryl, I know you miss GB so much, and the pain will never go away because you love him. Even though he is temporarily not on this earth anymore you will be reunited with him if you believe. I remember how proud you were of him, indeed the whole family was. He lived a standard that few will ever attain. There is a coming time in eternity for all who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior to see GB again, and rejoice in that great reunion. Be comforted with God’s peace Caryl.
