HELEN T. TAYLOR
Helen Tipton Taylor, 79, of 82 Ormond Avenue, Asheville, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at St. Joseph Campus, Mission Hospital.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Yancey County and was a daughter of the late Sam and Byrd Boone Tipton. She was educated in the Yancey County School System and was a graduate of Mission Hospital School of Nursing on Woodfin Street. Her 40 year career in nursing began at Aston Park Hospital, then at the American Red Cross for 18 years. After that, she helped establish the Coronary Care Unit at Memorial Mission Hospital and completed her career by retiring from St. Joseph's. She was a member of Abernethy United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Arnold Taylor; two sisters, Betty Radford of Mars Hill and Jo (Creed) Smith of Hickory, and Donald (Ferrie) Tipton of Yancey County; and a number of outstanding nieces and nephews.
She will also be greatly missed by Lilah Price, a former neighbor, who was like a granddaughter.
Helen was a loyal friend to her many colleagues in the medical community.
The funeral service will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Abernethy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anthony R. Sayer officiating. Private interment with the family will be Wednesday at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard.
The family will receive friends at the church from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Abernethy United Methodist Church, 1418 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting with the arrangements.
