Grethel Cooper, 91, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock following an extended battle with cancer.
A native of Buncombe County and long time resident of West Asheville, she was the eldest daughter of the late Weldon H. and Mary Etta Morgan Warren. She was also preceded in death by her husband J. Clinton Cooper, who died July 9, 1989, and by two sisters, Teena Strange and Betty King, and a brother, Weldon H. Warren, Jr. She was a member of Emma Baptist Church and a former member of White Rock Baptist Church in Candler. She was retired from Taylor Instrument Co.
She was a loving sister, aunt, friend, and caregiver to her siblings, nieces and nephews.
Surviving are three sisters and three brothers, Mattiewood McCurry and husband, Carroll, of Candler, Juanice Warren of Asheville, Violet W. Ducker of Mills River, Sam Warren of Desert Hot Springs, CA, Robert L. Warren and wife, Coralee, of Baltimore, MD, and Levon Warren and wife, Brenda, of Asheville, and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a funeral at 11:00 a.m. in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. The Revs. Dan McCurry and Ryan Ducker will officiate with interment to follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elizabeth House, 581 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731-9447.

I worked with Mrs. Cooper at Taylor Instrument and remember her as a dedicated and conscientious employee. I regret her passing and send my deepest sympathy to the family.

Dear family, I have many memories of Grethel from my years at White Road Baptist Church and many times in your home. I know you will miss her smiling face and loving spirit. It has been many years since I have seen her, but my heart is saddened to know she has passed this earth. We shall meet again just over in the gloryland! Our prayers are with you all.
