Ruth Whitson, of Asheville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, following a period of failing health. Ruth was born on July 27, 1925, and was a daughter of the late George W. and Elsie MacMillan Whitson. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Eloise Whitson and brother, Charles A. Whitson. A native of Buncombe County, she was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School, attended Woman's College of the University of North Carolina Greensboro and graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She continued her graduate studies at the University of Denver in Colorado and was the Program Administrator of Buncombe County Department of Social Services until her retirement. Ruth had a great love for the mountains, hiking and riding her horse throughout the area. She and her sister, Eloise, were world travelers, seeking unusual places of natural wonder and beauty. She was a member and Elder of Kenilworth Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her sister-in-law, Elizabeth V. Whitson; a nephew, John C.W. Whitson, his wife Patricia and their children Kathryn and Ryan; a niece, Mary Beth Wilcoxen, her husband Dwayne and their children Connor, Justin, Ethan and Matthew. Graveside services will be 11:00 am Friday at Green Hills Cemetery with the Reverend John David Stewart officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting with arrangements.
