Asheville ~ Jimmie Winfrey Bartlett, 85, of Givens Estates in Asheville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 following a brief illness.
He was born and raised in Buncombe County and was a son of the late John W. and Thelma Gentry Bartlett.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Ray Bartlett; two devoted daughters, Susan B. Spehr and her husband Frank and Rebecca B. Russell and her husband Tony; five grandchildren and eight (soon to be nine) great-grandchildren.
He served in the US Army Air Corps from November 1940 until October 1945. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific War Zone for 31 months. After the war, he returned home and was employed in the motorcycle squad of the Asheville Police Department for 5 years. He was a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine, a past president of the Hendersonville Rotary Club, past commander of the VFW Post, past president of ABC Officers of NC and he retired as the supervisor of the Hendersonville ABC Board.
A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the Mills River United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Care Partners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813 or to the Mills River United Methodist Church Building Fund, 131 Old Turnpike Road, Mills River 28759.

I read with sorrow the news of Jim’s death. I really enjoyed our conversations at school gatherings and valued his and your friendship.
