Betty Looney Gantt, 72, of 27 Old Spring Dr., Candler, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. A native of Buncombe Co., she was a daughter of the late Roy Chester and Ila Price Looney. Betty enjoyed baking, crafts, and spending time with and caring for her family and friends. She had retired from Square D, where she worked as a parts assembler. She was a member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church for 61 years. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a perfect lady, and her family will miss her with all of their heart. Mrs. Gantt is survived by her husband, Howard Gantt; two daughters, Debbie Reese and Barbara Pearson, both of Asheville; step-children, Mark Gantt, of San Carlos, CA, Jim Gantt, of Asheville, and Debbie Morgan, of Marion; grandchildren, Beth Weaver, Laura Pearson, and Kristen Caison, all of Asheville; two step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Starnes Cove Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Sams and Glenn Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Piney Mountain United Methodist Church Cemetery. Her family will receive friends 7-9:00 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. Memorials may be made to the ALS Foundation, Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Dr., Raleigh, NC 27603, Starnes Cove Baptist Church, 149 Starnes Cove Rd., Asheville, NC 28806, or to the John F.     I have had the privilege to witness your love for Betty during these last days. The tenderness and compassion shown to her made her transition to heaven an easier one. She had no doubt of your love, and you need have no regret. I’ll never hear ‘Annie’s Song’ without thinking of her. I regret I will not be able to attend the visitation time, but know that you are in our prayers.
