Ethel Geneva Stanley Smith, 88, formerly of 19 Fremont Road, Asheville, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the Oaks of Sweeten Creek following a long illness. A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Lena Beasley Stanley. She was also preceded in death by her husband Thomas B. Smith in 2001, and a brother, Arthur R. Stanley. She was retired from Kelwood Corp. and was a member of West Asheville Church of God where she held various offices, was a member of the choir, served as church secretary and taught Sunday School for 41 years. Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Linda Smith of Daytona Beach, FL; Janice Carter and her husband Orville of Douglas, GA and Gayle Riggs and her husband Al of Arden; two sisters, Annie Jo Smith of Candler and Mary Etta Swayngim of Swannanoa; two brothers, Alfred B. Stanley of Asheville and William Stanley of Candler; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Stanley of Asheville; five grandchildren, Sheila Garoppo, Lorrinda Johnson, Lisa Riggs-Coffey, Brent Carter and Bender Riggs and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Monday at West Asheville Church of God with the Revs. Aaron Phillips and Al Riggs officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Flowers will be accepted and greatly appreciated or memorials may be made to West Asheville Church of God, 60 State Street, Asheville, NC 28806.
