Hendersonville ~ Detlef A. “Doug” Gertz, 64, of Hendersonville died Friday, November 24, 2006, at Margaret R. Pardee Hospital. He was a son of the late Alfons and Edith Gertz. He was also preceded in death by his wife Karen Ruth Gertz who died in 2004. Doug emigrated from Germany to the United States with his parents in 1954 and later he and his wife Karen retired to Hendersonville from Michigan in 2000. He was a United States Air Force Veteran who had a passion for golf, card playing, jigsaw puzzles and most importantly his family. He was a retired cost analyst from Ford Motor Company and was very involved in the planning and budgeting of the new Living Savior Lutheran Church on Overlook Road of which he was a member. He is survived by his daughter, Anita Gertz Plagge and her husband Timothy of San Diego, California and Doug’s close friend Marian Baldwin of Hendersonville. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 28 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with Pastor John Qualmann and Vicar Jeremy Cares officiating. A private burial will be held at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:30 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made in Doug’s memory to the Living Savior Lutheran Church Building Fund, 301 Overlook Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

    What promises from our Lord! Doug was convinced of this, and so we are convinced that He is now at the side of our Living Savior! May the Lord bless his family with this incredible hope.

    I remember well my time in Asheville as vicar, and I have fond memories of Doug and will never forget meeting him or his wife.

    I was a good friend of Karen’s and grieved with Doug and family at her passing, now we are grieving at the loss of Doug. Our Thoughts and prayers are with you all and we believe Karen has been waiting on the other side for her Doug, now they are reunited.
