Asheville – Margory Upham Kieffer, a resident of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, died on January 13, 2006, after a prolonged illness.
She was born in 1917 to Margaret and Arthur Upham in Bay Head, Nova Scotia, Canada, but spent most of her early years in Truro, N.S. After completing schooling in Colchester County schools, she attended and graduated from Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick. Thereafter she entered nurses training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Following completion of nurses training, she remained at Hopkins where she became nursing supervisor of the Osler Medical Clinic. At the time of her retirement in 1952, she was Associate Director of the Hopkins School of Nursing.
In the course of her work at the Hopkins Hospital she met her future husband, Dr. Richard F. Kieffer whom she married in 1950. The lived in Baltimore and Baltimore County until Dr. Kieffer retired in 1980 when they moved to Talbot County, Maryland and later to Asheville, North Carolina.
Mrs. Kieffer was predeceased by her twin brother, Mervyn A. Upham and by her three older brothers, Lloyd, Rexford and Perley.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years; by her son and daughter-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Robert W. Kieffer and by her grandson, Wilson F. Kieffer, all of Asheville, NC.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. E. Morgan Gardner at St. Giles Chapel, Deerfield, on Sunday, January 15, 2006, at 4:00 PM.
The family has requested that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel Fund of the Deerfield Retirement Community, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
