Sallie Mae Wiggins Hyatt, 100, of Asheville, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at Brooks-Howell Home following a short illness. A native of Swain County, she was the daughter of the late James L. and Mary Beard Wiggins. She was also preceded in death by her husband Charles Montgomery Hyatt, a son James R. Hyatt and a daughter Dorothy Hyatt Triplett. She was a devoted homemaker to her husband and children. She was a self-made scholar and her love of reading carried over after her vision loss, reading over 2000 titles through Talking Books. Her love of travel extended throughout the United States and beyond and her quest of learning was also evident. She was a long standing member of West Asheville Baptist Church, active in church services, Sunday School and XYZ activities. She served as President of the Perry Bible Class. The family extends appreciation to the total staff of Brooks-Howell Home for not only their excellent care but also for their love and compassion. Mrs. Hyatt is survived by two daughters, Frances S. Sowell and her husband John of Marietta, GA and Betty Cooper and her husband Charley of Asheville; daughter-in-law, Patricia Hyatt of Asheville; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Jane Curran officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Churchyard in Fletcher. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Mission Low Vision Center, 50 Doctors Drive, Asheville, NC 28801.
