Loyd “Red” Bowman, 81, of Asheville, passed away Friday, April 15, 2005, at the VA Medical Nursing Facility.
He was born May 7, 1923, and was a lifelong resident of Asheville. He retired from the US Postal Service after 39 years, two months and twenty-six days! He was known as “Red the Mailman” on Valley Street, Biltmore Avenue and Coxe Avenue. He was an Army veteran of WW II and served in Normandy, France, and Central Europe in 1944.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years “Miss Juanita” who operated Valley Street Grocery for 35 years; two daughters, Robby Price and her husband Brian of Black Mountain and Brenda Buckner and her husband Ronny of Fort Mill, SC; a grandson, Chris Ledford and his wife Pam of Arden; and great-grandsons Colby, Dillon, Graceson, and Brayden Ledford.
A funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. George Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
