Asheville Butterfly TrailRobert Eugene Smith, 78, of Candler, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
A native of Paterson, NJ, Robert was a son of the late James Raymond and Rosemary Elise Sandis Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Gosnell Smith; and brother, James Raymond Smith, Jr.
Mr. Smith proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, exemplifying his dedication to his duty. He was also a member of The Church at Asheville.
He is survived by his daughter, Julia Denise Winchester (Tim); sons, Jarred Anthony Smith and Matthew Aaron Smith; brother, Thomas Andrew Smith (Karen); seven grandchildren; three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter on the way; and one niece and two nephews.
The celebration of life service for Robert will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, at The Church at Asheville.
