Patricia Ann Penley, 80, of Asheville, NC passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Smith and Pearl Hollifield Smith; her husband, Donald Ernest Penley; her niece, Susie Hipps; and a grandson, Eric Hildebran.

She worked in the Corporate Office of Ingles in Black Mountain, North Carolina as an Office Manager.

She is survived by a daughter; Donna Penley Hildebran (Steve), three grandchildren; Kendale and Kylee Hildebran, and Logan Sparks. She shared an especially close bond with her nephew, Shane Hipps, who held a special place in her heart and whom she loved like a son. She also had another special nephew, Travis Penley, who she loved to spend time with. Special thanks to her niece, Annette, and and her sister-in-law, Martha, for their help taking care of Patricia for the last couple of years. She also adored all of her Smith family!

Her family will receive friends beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. The Rev. Keith Dockins will officiate.

  3. Donna Ann and family, please know that you are in our hearts. We will hold you up in prayers and support in the days ahead for comfort and peace. May you lean on the Lord to guide you through your tomorrows with the “new- not so normal” day in and day out. I am so appreciative for Annette and Martha to be able to help you during the difficult times- such a blessing. Just remember this isn’t goodbye- just a “little waiting period” until we meet again. May all those that remain be ready for that wonderful Reunion Day! Thank you for letting us share special moments in Patty Ann’s final months.

She was a wonderful woman and she she will be missed and my heart and prayers are with you and I feel like that we are family and we are. And i know DONNA much that she loved you and your girls.and how much that she missed your dad but now they are together again.     From your Vacation Bible School lessons, you gave me the most important message that changed my life:

  7. My sincere condolences to Pat’s family and friends. I only knew of her from my Dad, Vic Fisher of Ingles Markets, but I do know he thought highly of her.
