  4. John was a great friend to and my wife Barb
He was the reason we moved to Asheville. He immediately took me into his group of friends

  5. John’s compassionate work contributed greatly to everyone in the city of Asheville. Many advanced projects, actions and courageous decisions benefited employees and citizens alike, some were behind the scenes of everyday city work and he never asked for limelight in his great work and always kept public safety in mind. When the city of Asheville acquired the new E911 system John created , narrated and produced an amazing video that explained to our youth when, how and what happens when you call E911. This VHS video was utilized in the teaching of E911 by police, fire and EMS in every kindergarten and first grade classrooms in the city of Asheville in 1990. One of many, many achievements John accomplished behind the scenes for everyone.
John left behind a legacy of goodness and light. Well done John.

    • My condolences to the family. He will be deeply missed. He cherished his upbringing in West Asheville and generously donated an old trolley bell to my small museum. His name will remain on display for years to come.

  6. John was a gentleman, a superlative person in every respect. May the God of all comfort hold his wife and family especially close in their time of grief.

  7. My longest, lifelong friend. Cub scouts, Trinity Methodist Church, Hall Fletcher Jr. High, Lee Edwards High, UNCA, City of Asheville fellow department head. Very frequent telephone talks, initiated by either of us, of all things he cherished – family, Asheville history, our old City friends, politics, the wrongs of the world. Extremely few subjects he wasn’t proficient in. I’ll miss it all.

  8. A very fine man who possessed a warm and robust personality. A man who showed his worth as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
His dedication to his friends was exemplary.
John was a true patriot and honorable gentleman.
    I will miss his friendship.

  9. John is a Dear Friend and I am going to Miss Him; I’m going to miss his humor and his wisdom, especially the way he could articulate his position on current events. Most of all I’m going to just miss him and our Long Winded talks where we would “Solve the World’s Problems”. I’m Very Grateful that John is a Christian Man who is in Eternity with Our Blessed Heavenly Father and His Son Our Lord and Savior! We have the Assurance that non-Believers don’t understand. Hallelujah an Amen!

  10. I loved my friend John! John knew the Lord and he always had a smile on his face for everyone. He was a valuable member of the Brookstone Security team and was always encouraging to everyone he encountered!!! I am going to miss you my friend. Go rest high on that mountain! See you soon

  11. One of the nicest and genuine people on this earth. Watched out for me when I was interning and living in a basement apartment. Rest in peace. ❤️

  12. My first thoughts go out to John’s family who he loved more than anything. I am so sorry for your loss. John and I spent our careers together working for the city of Asheville. He was a friend and co worker always willing to help. After retirement we continued to stay in touch and worked on several projects together. I will miss his humor and friendship and we will all miss a great individual who really cared for his community, family and friends.

  13. To all of the Miall’s, your dad was always so kind and helpful with just about anything. I will miss him dearly. May your memories bring you comfort.

  14. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of John. He was a great person and someone I admired as a city employee, colleague and friend. I worked with John for 7 years with the City of Asheville. He had a tremendous sense of humor. John also found his calling in health care and risk management. He did well with whatever challenge he was given. I know his family and friends will truly miss his big personality, smile and belly laugh. I pray comfort for John’s family at this most difficult time.

  15. John was one of a kind. Such a loving person to his family and friends, particularly Bill P. He was a great support & resource for Bill. I will miss his resonant voice and keen sense of humor.

  16. John has always been a really special soul. A great gentleman who welcomed my daughter and granddaughters into his and Sharon’s family. They both have shown us hospitality with each visit. He loved to share his special recipes of salsa and jams which everyone enjoyed. We will continue to pray for Sharon and for all of the family.
