Fred Petrazio, 87, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on August 28th in Wilkes Barre, PA, Fred was the son of Fred and Roxanne Petrazio. Throughout his life, he was known for love of his family, cooking, dedication, humor, faith and his relentless work ethic.
In 1956, Fred enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving aboard the USS Intrepid. During his service, the Intrepid completed tours of the Mediterranean, Guantanamo Bay, and the North Atlantic, including participation in Operation Strikeback. For many years, Fred worked for electric provider Penelec, in Altoona, PA. He specialized in Operations, Logistics and Warehousing.
When Fred retired, he and his wife, Kay, moved to Hendersonville, NC to be closer to their children. They were on a search for a church and found a wonderful church family at St. Barnabas Church.
Fred used his talents to support St. Vincent DePaul Pantry. For years, he spent his time and energy implementing processes to streamline the pantry and worked tirelessly to find ways to get as much food as possible for the people in need. He found his calling with the Pantry, and he loved the time he spent there and the volunteers that worked alongside him. Many meaningful friendships were formed, and countless hours were shared in service and camaraderie. They created a men’s group called the “Romeos,” a group of men who volunteered at the Pantry/Church and met weekly for breakfast to enjoy fellowship and reminisce about days gone by. He looked forward to the time he spent with each of them.
He enjoyed making spaghetti sauce and meatballs, cooking, singing, gardening and volunteering. Above all, he cherished time with his family and took great pride in spending time with each of them when they visited.
Fred is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathryn Crandall Petrazio, daughter, Kristina Petrazio Kelly (Angie Allen); son, Steven Petrazio (Cathy Johnston Petrazio); daughter in-law Marcy Beaken Petrazio; 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Roxanne, brother, Tim and son Mike.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, February 21st at St. Barnabas Church, 109 Crescent Hill Rd., Arden, NC 28704.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Barnabas Church / St. Vincent DePaul Pantry (in memo), in honor of Fred’s memory.
Fred will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

Fred was the best neighbor that my husband and I have ever had. He went out of his way to be helpful with anything we needed, especially during the hurricane. He and his lovely wife, Kay, brought us coffee, bread, water and propane. He was always involved in obtaining food for his food pantry and his boundless energy was awesome.
.my wife Rose and I worked hand in hand with Fred for 2 years in running the food pantry. Fred had one goal – to feed as many people as possible with as much food as possible every week!! He was a dear friend and a true saint who is now at peace, resting in the loving arms of his Lord. Condolences to Kay, Kris and his entire family!!! Deacon Chuck & Rose Moss.
Fred & Kay, while at Saint Patrick’s (Newry, PA.) were Together in everything, to assist making Everyone Welcome. Prayers especially at this Time. God Bless.
Fred was a good friend, mentor, and father figure I had the pleasure to know and respect.
Oh, so many memories, it’s difficult to sum them up.
Fred enjoyed life and always greeted you with a smile and “How are you!”
I guess I will remember Fred most for his never ending desire to help the needy with food and other supplies . I always teased him asking, as we loaded food at Food Bank, what army we were feeding this week?
My wife, Lynn, and I always looked forward to going to breakfast with him and Kay. Fred, besides being a great cook, enjoyed eating, especially breakfast!
There truly aren’t many “Freds” in this world today.
I will miss you Fred, but you are with Lord forever.
I met Fred 10 years ago volunteering at a church function. Later we both worked together in the food pantry at St. Barnabas. Fred’s dedication and hard worked help build the pantry to what it is today. He wanted to “feed the world” and I think he came pretty close to doing just that. Over the years, we became close friends. Dave and I enjoyed visiting with him and Kay and had many of his famous spaghetti meals together. May his memory be eternal. Rest in peace, dear friend. You will be missed.
We are very sorry to hear the news about fred. I think he sang at our wedding. He had a good voice. Our prayers are with you and your family.Jim and Mary Laughlin
I was so sorry to hear that one of my childhood buddies passed away. I loved Fred and his parents as I spent a number of meals at home as a child. God Bless Kay and the kids and grand kids. I know Fred wii be missed by all of his living classmates. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Fred’s always cheerful nature will truly be missed. He will leave a large hole in our church community and the community in general. He was always wanting to help others.
Imagine the welcome Fred got when he arrived in heaven after having spent such a huge amount of his life serving the poor. God’s love shone through his whole person!
We’ll miss you Fred, but the separation is only temporary!

I knew Fred through Kay who is a much loved Prayer Sister. They have always been such a dear and caring couple; always caring for others. I pray for strength for Kay as she continues her journey without her dear Fred as he goes to glory with our Lord.
I worked for Fred during his time at Penelec (the electric utility in Altoona PA). He was an excellent mentor and one of my favorite bosses. He instilled in me confidence and a belief that I could do the job. Even at work he made food as part of a Harvest for Hunger that raised money for the needy. I feel so fortunate that Fred helped shape my career and was always so very supportive. Prayers for Fred and his Family.

God bless him.
Goodbyes aren’t the end; they’re just the start of a new chapter where our friendship lives in memories and messages until we meet again.
Distance may keep us apart, but it can never erase the laughter, tears, and moments we’ve shared.
Over many years, Fred and I co-chaired fundraising at St. Patrick Church, Newry, PA, and served on the finance committee together. He was a great friend and is loved and missed!
Fred was a kind and gentle soul. He was an amazing support to my family. His love for helping others was obvious to all. I will miss his sweet smile, kind words, and his overall Godly presence. May he rest in peace.
