Born in: Washington, DC
Resided in: Asheville, North Carolina

John George Olup, age 102, of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 6 in Asheville. Born on September 22, 1923, in Washington, D.C., Johnny lived a remarkable life defined by faith, service, joy, and a deep love for others.

Johnny proudly served his country in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War, a commitment that reflected his lifelong sense of duty and integrity. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career with United Air Lines, from which he eventually retired.

A man of boundless energy and optimism, Johnny truly loved life. He was known for saying that every day was “a great day to be alive,” and he lived those words fully. An avid tennis player, golfer, pickleball enthusiast, and devoted walker, he remained active well into his later years. More than his activities, however, Johnny will be remembered for his kindness, positivity, and unwavering faith. He represented everything good in this world and left a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sara Yount Olup, as well as a brother, a sister, and numerous relatives.

He is survived by his loving children, Roger W. Olup and Peggy O. Yarborough; grandchildren John Olup (Julianna), Jessica Johns (Seth), Nicholas Wilkinson (Cortney), Jayme Ray (Jason), Taylor Olup, David Yarborough, and Mark Yarborough; and 13 cherished great-grandchildren, all of whom were a great source of pride and joy.

A graveside service will be held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Cemetery in Claremont, NC. A Celebration of Life will be held in Asheville at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eblen Charities. In Johnny’s spirit, the family also encourages everyone to share a smile or a kind word with those you meet—every day.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Words can hardly capture the love and admiration my family and I feel for Johnny. Having him as our neighbor for nearly 20 years has truly been one of life’s greatest blessings. Thank you, Johnny, for always being so kind, caring, and someone we could trust without question.

I’d love to share one of my favorite memories. When my daughter was just 3 or 4, we couldn’t find her one afternoon and started to panic. We were about to search the neighborhood when I stopped by next door—and there she was, sitting at Johnny’s dining table, happily chatting and eating jelly beans. Johnny welcomed her, and all of us, as if we were part of his family. That’s just who he was.

Sending love and prayers to the Olup family.

  2. Mr. Olup was one of the sweetest people I know. I worked at Lee Industries for years and loved this entire family. I was their customer service contact for a lot of years and when Mr and Mrs Olup would pick up furniture they always came to office and had me meet them. Always with a smile and big hug. I didn’t know their names for the longest time and referred to them as Peggy’s Dad and Mom. They both were so full of life and love and I love and respected them so. I became friends with this family and will always cherish these memories. I am so sorry to the family I know how he will be missed. Much love, prayers and hugs to you all.
