Asheville Butterfly TrailPeggy Jane Clontz Smith, 96, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
Mrs. Smith was born in Buncombe County to the late Thomas Crawford Clontz and Myrtle Catherine Pressley Clontz. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ralph Floyd Smith; two sisters, Myrtle Lee Gosnell and Dorothy Frady and a brother, Jack Clontz.
Peggy was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church for 94 years.
She is survived by her four children, Steven Smith (Alice); David Smith (Mary), Richard “Rick” Smith and Janet Kuykendall all of Asheville; one sister, Tommy Ledbetter; 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Calvary Episcopal Church with Reverend Todd Donatelli officiating. Burial will follow in the church’s cemetery.

I am so sorry for the loss of my dear friend Peggy. I cherish the time spent with her for the last ten years . Peggy was a strong Christian lady that had not a bad word to say about anyone. I will miss my times spent with her but I know we will meet again. Love to the family that I can say I feel a part of. May God help each of to have peace and comfort at your time of loss.
