Fletcher- Charles “Charlie” Davis Brown, 75, of Fletcher, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 10, 2025 at his residence.
A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Louis and Lily Butler Brown. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Charlie Brown and Christian Brown as well as a brother, Robert Brown.
Charlie was a tenth-generation master potter and owner of Brown’s Pottery, which opened in 1924. The Brown family is considered the oldest pottery-making family in the nation. The Southern Highland Craft Guild awarded him “Master Potter” status in 2012, bestowed by renowned folklorist Terry Zug. He was deeply proud of this accomplishment and spoke of it often. He would have listed his titles as husband, father and master potter.
He volunteered and worked for many years for the Skyland and Asheville Fire Departments. He was deeply proud of TC Roberson High School (Class of 1967) and was honored to be named a Graduate of Distinction. He also spoke often of representing the United States in the World’s Fair in Montreal, Canada. Some would say, even though Arden had not incorporated, it had a mayor and his name was Charlie Brown.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Deborah Todd-Brown; a daughter, Stefeni Brown of Arden as well as a niece, Lisena Brown of Montana.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be held in the near future and will be announced once the date has been set.
